They can spawn anywhere where there's dark. That means pretty much anywhere at night and indoors, unless you are using torches or lava/magma to light the place up.
Not only creepers, but zombies too!!!
:D
I was digging myself a deeper basement, had all accespoints locked with a door and had torches on the upper levels, but as I dug about 4 - 5 blocks down and began to dig sideways to make it long, I looked back as I heard grunting and saw a zombie and freaked, killed the fucker and wondered if I had opened an access to a cave or a glitch....after a little while, another one appeared pretty much in the same place!!!! :o

I object to the implication that my writing was "crude". The lines were straight and everything.
Retarded would be digging a hole in the dirt for no apparent reason and then standing in it.
Crude would be creating a large wooden knob. I'm looking at you, Duck... :)
But how rather wonderful you chose to create your very own name out of... dirt. Bravo, Sir. But I strongly recommend you go build something slightly more imaginative.

Also skeletons. I've had three skeletons jump on me on my mine before I learnt the importance of proper lighting. :weird: And I only had wooden swords at that point...
Damn, this current water system is completely broken. The water keeps flowing in different patterns when I pick up the spring and put it back. All the time it goes in a
completely different route. This kinda puts a damp on my world submerging plans...

Sounds like Brownian motion at the macro scale.

Nor lava, even though I'm well beyond 25-30 block deep. Am I simply not deep enough? The mine already looks like Moria...
Layers from bottom up (rough numbers):
64 : ocean / water / surface level
1-8 : lava lakes
1-128 : lava springs (more common underground tho - ie, below 64)
1-15 : diamonds (:)) and the red shit (extremely common, rivaling coal, and nearly useless)
1-35 : gold
1-64 : iron
1-128 : coal
10-64 : mossy-cobblestone - dungeons (at endpoint of caves)
60-66 : clay - near big lakes in sand (50-50 chance some of it is clearly visible on the surface - so, watch into the water along the shoreline also)
0 (if you find a way there) : void you can fall into - x_x
64 : reed - completely random areas (on grass tiles right next to water)
... um ... that should be all.
Strip mining for ore is not advised (unless you really need the safety). However, if done wisely and you have some use for massive amounts of cobblestone - why not. Go explore caves (and get massacred near an skeleton dungeon).
Caves are not uniformly spread: some areas are swish-cheese-death-trap-monstrosities, some areas are completely without any caves and some are sensible and easy to explore ones.

Friggin' a. That's... pretty deep. Oh well, another two weeks of mining and I might get somewhere.

I tried exploring caves but they are so random I keep getting lost... some are huge, and the random terrain means there's no logic behind them. Coupled with the fact some areas look like the others, it can get really confusing.
If you don't stripmine, how do you get lava?
Also - you can't set your spawn location in Alpha, or did I miss something? It should just be pressing "Enter", but it doesn't seem to work. At all.

That's the plan! It was about as imaginative I could get within a 10-minute "Sneak a look at Minecraft while I'm at work" play.
Next on the list is a gigantic wooden pha... oh...

Rumors about Survival MP, truth or lie, guys?
:o
Tenkahubu on 19/8/2010 at 08:13
I hope so. Multiplayer could do with a boost, at least the ability to forge! I'm guessing that chests still don't work, but I found some stuff I dropped on the ground ages ago so maybe dropped stuff remains. Probably a bad idea to go around dropping shit loads of junk though.

I've been squaring off all the caves as I go (so they look roomy rather than random), plus adding plenty of torches, generally in a pattern pointing back to home. You get tons of coal the further you go, so torches are only limited by wood (thus I still have to return to the surface sometimes, since my attempts to grow trees underground have not yet been successful..perhaps torches don't provide enough UV A and B for photosynthesis? :p).
Also, take lots of glass: if you get to a big dark scary cave with two branching tunnels, stick a torch or two down one, then wall it off with glass. This way you can explore the other branch in..uh..'relative' safety, and you can check for any monsters back in the walled-off branch, because: glass!
Found my first diamonds last night, plus managed to drown three zombies in gravel! Was awesome.
