I had a nasty surprise Creeper pop up in my mine last night.
For the most part, I place a torch either side of the main shaft every 8 blocks, which has so far seemed enough to stave off unwanted spawns, but I'd missed a spot. As I was mining out a bunch of cobblestone, I heard a "TSSSSSSS" as I knocked down the last block, and was confronted by Mr. Surprise Badaboom.
Bastard.
Still, my platform is coming along quite nicely now, and I've built a spiral staircase around the tower leading up to it. The centre of the staircase, where the ladder used to be, is now hollow with some water at the bottom to allow for a quick descent :)
Grass has almost reached the platform too, which is nice. Taken bloody AGES to grow up that high mind you.

I tried exploring caves but they are so random I keep getting lost... some are huge, and the random terrain means there's no logic behind them. Coupled with the fact some areas look like the others, it can get really confusing.
Like DDL noted - use torches to show the way out. I place them on walls so that they point the way i did go (makes them more visible when i am on my way back out) - and when i just need light, i put the torch on the floor to prevent confusion. Works very well. Also, i mark important junctions with more than one torch all pointing in the same direction. Also blocking off dead end fully explored cave parts helps (i usually just make one horizontal dirt bar across it).

If you don't stripmine, how do you get lava?
Stumble upon in deep caves - my current map is pretty much filled with it. Btw, begin your mining operations deep - leave the upper layers alone. I usually begin every game with a 2x1 shaft with ladder or 2x2 spiral down till adminium layer (1-4) - then dig there in a pattern that gives me all the ore that is there (with less than 1/4 of the ground dug)

Hehe - it helps if you are around - but damn slow still. A week or so old view of my current map:

That circular monstrosity is my mod farm - grass is just about to reach the top. There are trees also on top of it - but none are grown in this pic. I started the grass path at the same time i started with the farm btw.
Current world is pretty much feature complete:
* treefarm
* reed farm + farming themed building nearby (the one with one torch on top)
* central mineshaft building with lots of ovens and storage for base material. lava based garbage bin just outside of it.
* gravel walkways between main building and support buildings (double half-step matts near the entrance of main building)
* glass garden
* mobfarm
* lookout tower with a tree on top (above cloud level - platform itself is just below it)
* main building has: (everything thematically decorated : pictures / wood-glass tables / storage boxes with appropriate contents / bookshelves / jukebox / sofa / etc)
- robe, livingroom, kitchen, storeroom (bad translation), dock, bedroom, (+ some thing i can't remember what they are called in English atm), secret stashes for grim days.
- under main building : mob arena (double iron door pathway there - switch opens one door and closes the other to prevent mobs ever getting out of there) + relevant accommodations
- deeper under main building : main vault. huge obsidian walled room full of diamond-gold-iron block stacks everywhere. the iron door leading to there has its switch very well hidden.
btw: thous red sticks are my 3-minute lighthouse contraptions.

Wowzers. That's awesome.
Is there any way to share our creations, aside from pictures? It'd be fun to wander around someone else's crafted worlds.

Of course there is. Otherwise people wouldn't be doing Minecraft succession games.

I demand somebody start a TTLG succession game. I cannot, because I'm currently working, but make yourselves useful and do it for me! :thumb:

How big are these maps, anyway?

I couldn't sleep last night because I kept seeing blocks everywhere and me breaking and assembling them. I am so taking a break from this.

That's pretty damn impressive.
