Using those takes twice as much space though.

I've become a ladders man. Considering magic waterfall lifts though

Magic waterfall lifts? The fuck you say! Rad! :D
Anyway, I've had an interesting week. But since things are about to get nice and boring again, I'll be able to play a little more. I'll join on a succession game or two here in the next couple.

I've finally stepped into the fray and sorted things out enough to have created a little safe zone from which I forage by day and mine by night.
But, uh, bad guys can't open wooden doors, right? My safe zone is a safe zone, I think.

Safe from everything but creepers. None of the monsters can open doors (unless you're stupid like me and put a button outside), but creepers can blow them up (if you're stupid like me and smack one then slam the door in its face).

Not right now they can't. The first time I made my girlfriend try the game she built a little hut. A skeleton tried to get in, and as luck would have it his little block arm managed to get through one of the window holes in the door (night of the living dead style) "You told me I'd be safe!!!" she wailed. It looked great.
By waterfall lifts I mean that you can swim up 'em to an unrealistic degree. You need an air break every now and then. How to get waterfalls where you want them? Strangely voluminous buckets and careful planning!

Unfortunately (and I'm hoping Notch considers this a bug), skeletons can occasionally fire arrows through closed doors.

Well, if they were really crack shots... but yeah, I've had them making some pretty unlikely attacks at me around corners too.

So. After the
spectacular failure of my Flooding the World (tm) project, I decided to sail to new waters and try something new. And by "new" I mean a big honking water fortress. I can't seem to give up on ideas concerning water.
So, as a first step, I was mining sand and cobblestone like crazy. At that point the only thing more impressive than my hoard of useless junk was my death counter. Damn spiders camping at my respawn point.
But once I had enough materials, I began Project Refuge. A huge fortress in the middle of the deepest ocean I could locate, it's far from literally EVERYTHING and is as secure as a place possibly can get. It also served as a good starting point for my mining operation, which now puts Moria to shame and also netted me a lot of goodies, including roughly ten thousand pieces of cobblestone.*
The next step was taking my paranoia even further, and constructing an underwater base which can be accessed by a sub-sea train from the fortress. At this point I'd like thank Notch for breaking the water system, I'd have drowned like twenty times if not for the friendly water. :cheeky: Still, making an underwater base is pretty hard construction (compared to the rest) and takes a lot of patience. And thousands of temporary blocks, as there is no way to erase water other than putting a block onto it. Yaaaay.
After having the base ready, I set my sights on the next target: the shore. First things first: I built a sturdy bridge with two train rails, then established a forward supply depot. After bulldozing the terrain flat (two damn hills got in the way)* on an area that dwarfs my own home city irl, I finished making a defensive perimiter and flooded the entire place with light.
*I'm getting suspicious my coworkers notice I'm acting weird at work.
Anyway! Pictures!

Awesome stuff man! Now you really really made me want to build and underwater structure of sorts. :D
