To be fair, most games nowdays allow you to take screenshots without always having to alt-tab to paste into mspaint.

Lesson learned. Never give MrDuck op powers.
This is why we can't have nice things.

I'm experimenting with this to find out if my theory is correct, but it would appear that placing a torch on a tree retards its growth.
I've just knocked the torches off of one of my platform's trees to see if it starts growing again.
In other news, I finally found a massive underground network of caves. Most of my spelunks had ended prematurely, only going a few blocks underground before stopping disappointingly short.
However, this current network seems to go on forever, and has all the goodies in it, so I'm extending the walkway to reach the entrance and building a spiral staircase / rapid descent system (read: massive fall into a shallow pond of water) above it.
I was lucky to discover it again, as the first time, I was just getting comfortable when I mistakenly tried to open a workbench while I had a bucket of lava in my hands. That didn't end well and resulted in a huge loss of equipment :(
I've also taken to building massive needle-like beacons when exploring the wilderness any distance from home. To that end, I always take 64 earth and 64 sand with me wherever I go.
Now I just need to start building massive arrows on the top of said beacons pointing back home :E

After being curiously addicted for a week, I think I'm pretty much done with Minecraft until more gameplay is implemented. I've more or less run out of things to do.
I converted a cave into a cool little secure hobbit hole, and dug out half the mountain beneath.
I built a two-story stone and wood house perched over the water, complete with balconies and a glass-bottom view into the lake. I also built an attached mine and, again, dug out half a mountain, stumbling across multiple existing cave systems and at least one monster dungeon which I partially cleared out until boredom with the combat mechanic kicked in.
I've mined iron, red stones, gold, diamonds, and enough coal to power China for two months. I've built armor, weapons, tools, and even a decorative picture or two.
I've dug down to the layer of bedrock and hollowed out a great deal of surrounding stone. I've diverted lava flows and underwater streams into tunnels and chambers.
All of which was great fun, but I don't really know what else there is to do. I like the existence of monsters as an environmental threat--frantically securing a safehaven before night falls, "claiming" existing cave systems by racing through and planting torches before baddies spawn, etc.--but I don't really enjoy fighting them enough to consider mob hunting or dungeon clearing all that compelling.
I love the building mechanic, but I'm not all that interested in spending vast quantities of time constructing things that have no real in-game purpose beyond aesthetics (my two story house is cool and all, but it has no actual advantage over a well-lit and secured hole in the wall). This isn't to criticize the Assidragons of the world who spend hours building cool structures just because they can, of course, as what he and others are doing is cool as hell. It just isn't something that I personally have the patience for.
I've pretty much mined everything there is to mine and crafted everything that I care about. I've carved out my little slice of existence in this randomly generated world and my empire needs no further expansion.
As such, I'm done (for now). I'll leave my kingdom on pause as I wait for more updates to roll out, hopefully with beefed up gameplay and more tangible "things to do."
In the meantime, however, I'll consider Minecraft to be quite possibly the best $12 I've ever spent.

Not sure who built the wooden structure in the foreground and the TTLG lettering you can just see in the background?
Guilty.
That and the massive tree. I didn't build the bridge from the wooden tower to the tree though, since there's already a passageway going up through the trunk of the giant tree :P
