Yeah, I've got a really bad feeling about limited-lifespan torches. That basically turns them into glorified flares.

I'm kinda warming up to the idea. In a way light is probably the most valuable "resource" in the game (at least in SP), but it's thoroughly devalued at the moment what with the nonchalant torch-spamming. As long as torches last long enough to still make them useful for exploring (a couple of hours maybe) and lanterns aren't too expensive to make, it might be a good change. It'll increase the contrast between the security of the inhabited areas and the wilderness, and with monsters and damage maybe making it into SMP that might be pretty cool.

Y'know, even though torches are dirt-cheap in terms of resources, and it's fairly trivial to blanket entire mountainsides with them... I don't. It just feels wrong.
Same reason I usually leave springs and lava flows alone, even though blocking them off or even destroying them is simple.

Yes, I get the feeling that what Notch really wants for Survival is a mode with constant tension and menace once you're out of your safe house, not a "dig the mightiest pit you can imagine".
This is going to be tough and people will have a hard time just gathering enough resources to clear a single mine shaft. But then, for these people there is creative mode. I'm really warming up to the idea, too.
I wonder if eventually it might be easy for server owners to switch the game difficulty on the fly. Imagine one tough survival week for everyone, followed by a safer, more thriving creative week. That would be a nice compromise.
