It's a really simple, un-intrusive UI, and nothing like a rogue-like at all.
I find myself wanting some roguelike features though. A couple of wands, like a wand of digging or a wand of ice, would be really cool. Also, more critters would make things more interesting in Survival mode. I suppose these things will happen with time.

There's actually stuff similar to that coming, more monsters, and monster villages actually, and atm you can find small dungeon rooms with hidden fun stuff inside if you're lucky.

I love when people use the term "Hidden Fun Stuff". It makes me all giddy.

I did find a secret room buried about 30 tiles down, but it featured only a fire in the centre of the room and a disappointingly empty chest :(

If it was in multiplayer then it's most likely because of missing features, if in singleplayer, no idea.

Oh God, I can't stop playing, help me....

Looks like a nice game, apart from steep learning curve (like guessing what you just mined). Also, it keeps stuttering for me. I get 120FPS in the ingame display, but it feels like stuttering. Eh...
Edit: Oh my god, I just built a three-story castle. O_o

Based on the recommendations in this thread, I bought this...and jesus fuck. The FEAR.
Clearly, spoiled as I am by all these quicksave/multiple life/checkpoint every ten feet games, this is terrifying. Not knowing what any of the noises are (ok, pigs cows and chickens yes, but then you hear a "groaaaaann") or how fast anything moves or how deadly anything is, and starting essentially bereft of anything except the ability to punch sand and dirt into small cubes...and you get ONE life*.
So first time round, not knowing what the hell to do, and possessing no assets greater than 17 cubes of sand, 5 cubes of wood and 12 cubes of dirt, and after hiding in treetops for the first two nights because I was terrified (build stairs up to treetops, punch stairs to death once safely up), I spotted a cave that was all lit up even at night. Given that a creeper (or something: hell, I was running away from anything not clearly identifiable as sheep/cow/pig/chicken) was heading my way anyway, I ran to investigate this, and found a natural cavern with a lavaflow dripping down into it. By careful jumping and subsequent excavating, I was able to get into the cave and enlarge the lava pool such that anyone else trying to enter the same way would drown (in lava). I later found several pieces of string dotted around this pool, so I assume some spiders tried to risk it. Hah! Fuck you, spiders!
So then I checked out Eldron's crafting link (thanks!) and managed to make myself some planks, then a workbench, and then a pickaxe, an axe and a spade, and set about making my "safety cave" into home. I built a bridge over the lava pool (now a river: fluid physics yay!) and then dug a staircase to the surface (checking through the original roof hole to make sure it was daytime). By dashing out during the day and cutting down trees, then retreating in the evening and destroying my bridge, I felt like I was pretty safe. I even saw a creeper wander down the stairs and jump into the lava, which was nice.
I found some metal, and smelted it, and began to enlarge my subterranean home. Given that I hadn't found any coal (is it coal? Whatever you make torches with), my only source of light was ...lava. So, lava-based illumination it was, then! I managed to make a nice channel of lava running through my excavations, with frequent (but easily destroyable: paranoia is hard to lose) bridges over it.
Things were going well!
Needless to say, the eventual moral of this story is...don't get complacent around lava. Burning to death in the middle of your super-safe panic-cave is pretty heartbreaking. :erg:
So second time around, and more versed in crafting, I have made myself a nice cave and burrowed down maybe 20-30 blocks deep. I have found coal! I have many torches! I have smelted sand into glass and added several windows to check for external monsters. I have discovered a hidden cave complex!...Full of monsters. I now have a tunnel that ends in a hastily assembled window, with angry monsters jumping up and down on the other side. Monsters can't break glass, right?
I have dug, I suspect, too deep. Or at least, for too long. I have run out of wood and sand, and when I returned to my heavily windowed surface cave room this morning...there were spiders outside every window. So many spiders.
And yet, damnit, I can't wait to finish work so I can go back and carry on. This is fantastic.
How do you guys manage to get around to building things? I've just been making dwellings by carving them down into the rock, and I can't imagine being brave enough to construct something external, without at least making sure there was a very clearly defined, protected (and easily sealable) entrance and several escape routes.
*also, I may be wrong, but is it actually "one life and then you have to start over, but you can do so in the same world?" And if so, do changes you made in a previous life persist?

"They delved too greedily and too deep, and disturbed that from which they fled ..." :p

The caged fire is a monster spawner but you were probably playing on peaceful so nothing came out.
DDL: You respawn where you started when you die. There's no consequence except losing what you were carrying unless you can run back in time to pick it all back up.
