The caged fire is a monster spawner but you were probably playing on peaceful so nothing came out.
Yea, it was on Sinister's server. Which also refuses to let me smelt anything, getting stuck half way through the process and destroying anything I put into the furnace. I guess that's why it's still Alpha.

Based on the recommendations in this thread, I bought this...and jesus fuck. The FEAR.
Haha, yes. I tunneled into some rock and the godawful noise that was coming from behind the wall somewhere had me beating a hasty retreat.

It would be so awesome if you dug down a little too far and.....BOOM.

I'm currently working on a sky-town, where I initially made a tower straight up and then started building a platform out from it.
So far, I have 1 3-storey house up there, a greenhouse, a small pond, some trees and flowers and I'm coaxing grass up there.
From up there I can see all kinds of interesting places on the horizon, so I intend to make walkways leading to these places. I haven't been bothered by nasties in ages, retreating to the safety of the platform at night.
My biggest danger is that I started to expand the platform exactly at cloud level, so I'm frequently in danger at night of stumbling off of the edge, due to vision being clouded by... well, clouds.
Just wish I could bring some peaceful wildlife to my happy sky place.

Haha, you too? I've made some ridicolously high tower (almost at the cloud level) for no other reason that "why not". I also made a "skyway" for it, basically a walkway from the respawn point to the tower's base. I may have gotten tired of being killed after respawning with no items.
Edit:
Screenshots!
(
http://ravenlord.strangled.net/content/temp/minecraft/tower_day.png) This is the tower, or rather, what's finished of it.
(
http://ravenlord.strangled.net/content/temp/minecraft/skyway.png) Might be hard to make out, but that's the skyway to the respawn point - helps avoiding everything on the way. :p
What's annoying is that I've been digging like mad around as well (tower needs LOTS of rock), and I haven't found any ore yet, only coal. Grumble, grumble...

Find a saddle and ride them up there, possibly.

I did find a secret room buried about 30 tiles down, but it featured only a fire in the centre of the room and a disappointingly empty chest :(
I was mining rock for MrDuck and I fell down your mineshaft with only a half strength wooden pick axe to my name. After trying desperately to mine my way out with my bare hands, I decided the lava was a better option, except it respawned me in the lava eyery time. :( At least I know where my missing chest went.
I remember the night I spent cowering in my hut from the horrible noises outside only to have it continue once daybreak came. After finally working up the courage to go outside I found two cows staring me in the face. Damn cows.

I've never found a saddle, but apparently you can't control the mount once you're on it, which apparently quite frequently leads to people getting suffocated by trees.
Edit: Oh yeah, and my tower is really just a straight pillar with a ladder going up the middle, leading to the real construction.
My Dwarf Fortress mind kicked in, and it's a miniature attempt to "pave the sky".

now a river: fluid physics yay!
Yay!? ... yes ... and no. While the addition of flow is nice (waterfalls and i just finished my multi-store fully automated mob farm) - it has lost something even greater:
* no more fear of flooding (ocean-infinite and lake-finite kind) - always having a safe route in mind in case flooding happens and building countermeasures just in case. LOTS OF FUN!
* no more flooded cave systems (and mixtures of water and lava) - finding swish cheese cave system in ocean and the process of "exploring" that :cheeky:
* no more creating your own lakes (filling lakes bucket-by-bucket does not count) - PRICELESS!
* no more water evaporation (draining lakes and caves) - creating frigging awesome underGROUND lakes in the process!
Some fond memories: getting lost in a cave and digging up (harmless in infdev - but something you would want to avoid ever doing in indev) ... and hitting water x_x. Luckily i survived - but the lake i built my settlement at was nearly completely drained ... god ... f* damn it! Also, while i was not able to find my way out the right way - the water from the lake found its way into my main mine (luckily not at full height - but unfortunately above torch line still).
Some more fond memories: while spelunking in the deepest caverns i found some diamonds ... in the ceiling. While digging up the vein i exposed a lava block directly over my head (lava used to be as fast a water). So i run ... lava closely following and filling the ENTIRE CAVE behind me (i panicked and run in the unexplored-dead-end way) - just a big wall of lava rushing after me x_x. Managed to get to higher ground - just barely above the presumed death line. So, there i was - watching the newly formed lava like around me ... trapped (lava around me and probably the remnants of the lava like above me) ... and just lost a cave system. But suddenly the new lava like started to recede !!! :D it found a way to bottom lava layer and drained - leaving behind a maze of randomly solidified blocks. Made me VERY happy.
Unfortunately - Notch values multiplayer more and there is not much hope thous two kinds of fluid systems ever getting combined :(
Assidragon on 17/8/2010 at 18:10
Well, to be fair, getting multiplayer working (without outrageous bugs) would do this game wonders. After that the fluid systems could be still reworked I guess!
