Here's the promised poll regarding protecting our Minecraft server. I see four ways of doing that.
This poll is public, please do not vote if you're not a regular on the server. Voting ends in 3 days.
* The old-school way: Password shared by word of mouth and PMs.
* The restrictive way: Admin and ops white-listing players that can access the server, all others are denied entry. Entry request in this thread.
* The moderator way: Players ranked as guests by default, unable to build/remove. Can be promoted to builders by an op.
* The current way: TNT and flint&steel disabled.
Please note that a spawn jail wouldn't work.

I like the moderator method.

Me too. Only slight drawback is if no ops are on you could get stuck.

Moderator way. There is almost always an OP on or at least will be in bit. We have them from all parts of the world, and that ensures that even @ 3am...some OP or another is playing @ noon his time.

I voted for "restrictive" but "moderator" sounds equally good.

Moderator sounds good.

The wording of polls often affects the outcome. If you had gone with "the community way" instead of "the restrictive way" people would likely give it more consideration. From what you've said before I expect that would be your least favored option, but I'm not sure it would be all that restrictive. It shouldn't be much of a hassle for TTLG members to drop a quick line, and as for random people on the interwebs who don't care to register, would they really even want to play here rather than on one of the hundreds of other minecraft servers out there? At least that would pretty much guarantee that there would not have to be any restrictions in-game and likely get rid of all griefing.
On the other hand I suppose the posting requirement would stop some people who might otherwise go on to positively affect the server from ever giving it a try. I have no idea what sort of hits these forums get, but I'm pretty sure the poster/reader ratio must be very very low, and I'd argue that the people who have read the forums for years are just as much a part of the community as the handful of posting celebrities :p
I doubt I'll vote for the whitelisting; just thinking aloud here. The old-school way could easily go wrong if some slighted griefer were to share the password in his griefer community and urge a horde of bored kids to follow in his footsteps, and disabling flint and TNT is letting the terrorists win, so I guess that leaves the mod option. I'll wait a bit to vote since I'm sure I'm missing something that someone will point out.

If we start restricting the rights of law-abiding citizens of TTLGLand in an effort to stop griefing then the GRIEFERS HAVE ALREADY WON people! :(
We must not let the tragic events of September cloud our judgement.

I pick the moderator way, but I think some combination of all of them (sans the current way, which sucks) is probably best.

Now I don't play Minecraft so I might be wrong, but what would stop me from logging in on the server as, say, "dethtoll", get an OP and then burn everything to the ground? You plan to check the IP every time before OPing someone?
