To make up for killing the thread with space-nerdery, (
http://yawma.net/bundles/) here's a link to pay-what-you-want for Miner Wars. Site's legit.

There is some kind of demo that (
http://www.minerwars.com/Downloads.aspx) you can download here, but you might have to sign up to the site first to do so. And I'm not gonna sign up, so I can't download. But you guys should totally sign up and download and then tell me if it's any good ok?

Thought I was watching Microcosm there!

You say Descent, I remember thinking "Will it run on my 486DX2 50 with 4MB RAM?"
Just about, Men. Turn everything to low and Just About.

Meh. It's a boring tech demo of their destructible asteroid tech and little else. One to avoid until they add some actual gameplay to it.

Thanks for reporting back dvrabel. :)
How are the controls and the physics of the player-spaceship btw? Just like Descent?
dvrabel on 14/1/2011 at 13:10
I've not played any of the Descent games (should I?).
The space ship doesn't feel like a physical craft -- no sense of momentum, controls are precise and responsive. It doesn't fly anything like the craft in Independence War 2 which is my benchmark for spacey goodness.

The Descent games were great fun back in the day, but I don't know how well they've held up over the years. A new Descent-like game, like Miner Wars, is way overdue. It's a shame MW hasn't seemed very impressive so far though.

dvrabel: I wouldn't recommend thinking of Descent and I-War as even being in the same genre. They have almost nothing in common.
Descent has certainly lost its ability to blow your mind with its technical merits, but it's still a good game (not least because the enemy AI can still provide a real challenge). Nostalgia undoubtedly helps, though.
