Mirror's edge, looks promising. - by Fragony

You sound just like a friend of mine who insists that the game being in first person is bad because it's "not immersive enough." Though he says that for every first person game.
:laff: That is quite funny.
But I guess my argument is that it's too immersive.
To make my post clear I shall sum it up in a few words. `1st person+free running=bad idea & terribly confusing

That's because it's a game which premise relies on acrobatics and movement coordination, yet "body awareness" is just a buzzword right now, and you really don't feel in control of a real body in any first-person game, you just don't know where you are exactly and what your avatar's body is doing. For a game that heavily relies on acrobatics, jumping etc, third person will remain a better choice for years to come.

Except in this game you do. That's what makes it so great, and so innovative. I still haven't started the full game, but unless it's drastically different then the demo, I'd be happy never to play another 3rd person game again.

Aja is correct. Despite what many say about 1st person not working for the free running style of the game, this game does make you feel in control all of the time.

I have indeed tried it and didn't like it at all:erg:

Fair play then.

Okay, you haven't exactly said this, but I think you're implying it... I wish people would understand and acknowledge that "I don't like X" is not necessarily the same as "X is bad!" There's no single game that every gamer with discerning tastes will enjoy (and the other side of the coin: not everyone who dislikes, say,
Thief or
Deus Ex is a mouthbreathing idiot with no taste whatsoever).
On the first-person/third-person issue: I still think that
Max Payne works better in 3rd person, even though it's a shooter. This may be because it's so cinematic and Max is a strong, clearly drawn character. I don't need to feel that I am Max. He's separate from the player in ways that more blank player characters aren't. (Gordon Freeman, I'm looking at you.)
First-person doesn't automatically equate immersion, though, nor does third-person negate it. I found an
Ultima VII with its isometric top-down perspective much more immersive than, say,
Morrowind once I'd got past the initial "Wow!" effect. I notice that 3D worlds often feel a bit more 3D to me if I can see my player character, because I have more of a sense of the character in relation to his or her surroundings; at the same time, I always felt more like I was in Garrett's shoes than I ever did in Sam Fisher's, and I think that the different view had a lot to do with this.

Hmmm....
Not to sound all "lol consoletards" but I do think first person genuinely
needs to be either on PCs, or at least have a mouse. When I play FPSes on PC I tend to move the mouse around a LOT, constantly looking up and down and everywhere, giving myself a constant idea of my surroundings, much like people do subconsciously in real life. On console I don't look around as much, because it's sluggish as all hell and doesn't feel natural.

The wii anihilates keyboard/mouse supremacy, it really is amazing. You get analogue strafing and pixel-perfect accuracy. Pure bliss.

I've never actually held one, but from what I've seen, the Wii controller could, in theory, provide a fully valid and compatible alternative to the old mouse & keyboard control scheme. I'm seriously hoping Microsoft and Sony rip Nintendo the fuck off and make this sort of thing a basic standard for the next generation of consoles.
