Mirror's edge, looks promising. - by Fragony

Jacknife. I think my quickest time on that level is just under the 10 minute mark, something like 9:53 if I remember. You win.
I need to get the PC version sometime. You're always going to have a slight advantage with the pc control setup.
Funny story about Jacknife: The first time I did the speedrun for that level (11:00 minutes), I just made it - 10:59:97 but for some strange reason the game adds 0:00:04 of a second on and I ended up with 11:00:01. I wasn't amused.

Time Trial Map Pack released today.
I completely forgot about the EA Store's bullshit one year system for download purchases (You were doing so well by releasing decent games with not rapetastic DRM, EA, why retain the worst on-line purchase system ever devised?). I think I'm going to hold off on getting it for a couple days, see if it ends up in the Steam store (and hope that the version purchased off Steam will work with the retail full game).

I dunno if this content is worth $10, but it looks beautiful, you get some new ambient music, and in the half hour or so I spent running through each of the maps, I wasn't able to earn a single star (or even come close to it). I still kinda just want a playground without time limits, or better yet, a Mario-Bros style section where the only goal is figure out how to navigate the jumps (although if you ignore the timer, that's sort of what you're getting here).
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is: the aesthetics are amazing, therefore I love it.

Cool, now an action game is sort-of possible.

This game really is phenominal. It's one of the most immersive gameplay experiences I've had in a long while.
For the most part the gameplay itself is good, sometimes it's been a tad wonky on me and driven me up a wall but for the most part it handles really well. At first I was worried that it wouldn't be varied enough but so far it's given me a monkey-see-monkey-do section, more puzzling bits where it's about figuring out what to do with the environment, and sections where it's pure adrenaline and jumping onto whatever thing you see first. There's room for a bit more creativity in bending the formula, but so far so good.
And the narrative isn't as awful as most reviews made it sound. Yeah, the cutscenes feel a bit detatched from the ingame bits there's lines here and there that make me cringe (I'm not sure if they need a new actress to voice Faith or if the writing for her is just shit or something) but I went in expecting much less than I received.

Picked this up pre-owned yesterday for PS3, half the retail price. :D
Good fun so far though I got totally fucking stuck in Ropeburn after dodging the subway train and trying to get into the office to open the door. I love the visuals though, especially in HD.

8:56 on Jacknife, btw. Just sayin'.

Runner vision isn't exactly bothering me at the moment because I'm loving the sort of minimalist guidance it gives on the occasions I do get stumped. Also, I'm enjoying just getting caught up in the breathlessness of some of the rooftop sequences by just allowing myself to be pulled in the primary colour directions. I imagine I might switch it off and up the difficulty for a rerun at some stage.
Also must admit to loving the Matrixy touches of the slow-mo disarms. Very cool.
I think that the simplistic animated cutscenes are nice actually, a decent change from the norm and allows for - I don't know why - a greater sense of cinematic sensibility to the whole game.

Yeah, I had no problem with the way the story was being told, just more with the story itself. I think HL2 can get away with some of it's vagueness in the story since neither you nor any of the characters you meet, with one exception and he ain't telling, know much more than you, the player, find out. Mirror's Edge however has large gaps in the back story that are never filled in which is made more frustrating because the character you are playing knows this information.
I agree that the Runner vision works very well in the context of the chase, as it lets you just get into the flow and cuts down on the trail and error. It's a pity then that the later levels focus far too much on combat, sure you can avoid it but that's not very likely on your first attempts throught the levels, and muddled interior level design means that the trial and error skyrockets.
