Mirror's edge, looks promising. - by Fragony

You can still play them, but it won't save your times or your ghosts unless you're online.
Steam version on work PC has access to leaderboards and everything. I even tried re-installing my at home retail one and still got nothing (didn't even ask for my key after uninstalling and reinstalling the DLC, which was really weird). It's got to be saving my log-in info somewhere where uninstall doesn't wipe it, and my guess is that got corrupted somehow. I just can't figure out where it is. I guess I'll e-mail EA support.

Hard to believe a game can't save a time or ghost just because it can't connect to their server. I can understand them wanting to be extra sure the local and online versions are always synched as soon as you can connect, but to not have it at all without connecting is sort of silly. I guess we should be counting our blessings we can do time trials at all.

When you play offline it keeps your best times and you race against the best ghost (in time trials), or mine does. There isn't much fancy leaderboard or anything, but I've mostly done it that way.
Maybe it's just that offline and online aren't shared so if you haven't played offline you have to start over.
Just confirming this on the steam version at least: Was able to connect a minute ago and you do indeed have two sets of records, online and offline. You have to cancel out of the initial connection to access offline mode, otherwise you are in online mode by default until you exit and restart the game.

Mirror's Edge was really frustrating for me the first time through. Now I play it to relax. :p It's only about 1.5 hours to 2 hours to play it once you know the way. The game is a lot more fun on replay, or even re-re-replay. The truth is, all the runner-vision and face-the-objective button stuff they put in is entirely inadequate to guide you the first time. So, I was often in the position of having no idea where to go, but being unable to break cover without running flat out somewhere 'cause there's a chopper shooting at me. And then I fail a jump and die again... While there certainly are alternate paths - albeit mostly in the micro sense - it's not much of a sandbox at all.
...After 40 hours or so, disarms start to seem trivially easy. :cheeky: One thing that might not be clear is that different enemies are very different to fight close up. The early armored guys, for example, cannot be disarmed and don't drop their SMG's if you beat them up! The SMG's are hard to disarm, but easy to beat up. Icarus runners cannot be disarmed, and are difficult to beat up but rather fun to engage. Machine gunners don't move and are very difficult to beat up, but are really easy to disarm. Snipers and pistoliers are easy to disarm or fight, but snipers are very dangerous in open areas.

Well, well... I was going to post some more comments once I've played Mirror's Edge for a bit and found out what it's all about, but to my shock and horror, it seems like I just finished the game! :p
According to Steam, I only played it for a little more than five hours, and that's just too short if you ask me. I don't like it when some games seem to drag on far too long when I'd just like the story to end already, but come on, five hours! I think I might be a bit annoyed if I had paid the full price for the game, now I'm just disappointed that the fun didn't last any longer - yes, I did enjoy the game quite a bit! I was honestly just expecting the story to start unveiling to me, and there I was, staring at my screen in disbelief as the end credits started rolling in.
Anyway, I'm definitely going to play the game again, I think I'm even going to enjoy it more next time. I had to kill a few guards/cops/whatever on my first play through, so perhaps I'll try finishing the game without killing anyone... The gameplay did get a bit repetitive at times, so I could only play one or two missions at most per day, but it really was great fun in small doses. I found the controls really good and intuitive, I now wish that the Thief 4 developers have been playing Mirror's Edge as well and got some ideas from it. :p

Steam's timer is a well-known broken piece of shit. Don't take it at its word.

The game really is only 5 hours long, though, on the first playthrough.

That does not negate what I said in any way.

Mirror's Edge has that Resident Evil feature built in. You know, the one that demands you replay it to see/try various things in order to justify a 5 hour game. That said, they really should have released some story based DLC. I was shocked when they didn't. Hell, are they even working on a sequel?
Muzman on 24/9/2011 at 02:33
There was only about two people at DICE working on it and the last I heard they did some prototype/demo thing and EA sent them back to the drawing board. That was earlier in the year.
EA said once or twice that they're open to a sequel, but no one's throwing any money at it and DICE are kinda busy elsewhere I guess.
