Has anyone heard of
Wings of Saint Nazaire, a retro space combat game that apparently works with bitmap graphics the way that the first two
Wing Commander titles did. I haven't yet been able to check it out, but anyone with a yen for retro space shootery might want to have a look. The videos look like the dev is getting some interesting mileage out of a pimped-up bitmap-based engine.

Is that like Ms Pac Man?
It's certainly a curious approach to take in the age of 3D hardware. I wonder if there are any benefits (at all), or if it's purely driven by nostalgia?

Have to admit, that's the first thing that popped into my mind too when I saw the thread title. :)

Another thing Wing Commander enthusiasts could try is (
http://www.wcsaga.com/) Wing Commander Saga. I didn't play it yet, but it looks promising. I doubt that it uses simple bitmaps like the first two Wing Commander games, though.

Considering it runs on the Freespace 2 engine, I think it's safe to remove that thought from the realm of doubt.

I played WoSN about this time last year, and it doesn't seem that they've made a ton of progress, which is unfortunate. I really like the graphics style, though- not only is it really pretty for a Unity game, but their interesting system of prerenders gives it a retro feel while still looking decent.
Also, Wing Commander Saga is well worth playing.

Or just play any of the X-Wing games. Preferably Tie Fighter.

Those two series had a distinctly different feel from each other, though. Wing Commander was more the equivalent of one of the good Call of Duty games; X-Wing and TIE Fighter were more like a Rainbow Six game. Superficially similar, but very different flavours.

I was thinking it's probably the beauty pageant RSI hold every year, or soon will be.
