Considering that there was only the basic documentation, the early authors made some amazing missions. Now, with all of the new textures, scripts, etc, things have improved exponentially. I know of at least one renown author of the past, who tried to return to Dromed-ing, and gave up because it had become too complex.

That's a shame. Really FMs don't have to be overly complex to be good/fun. What was it in particular that turned him or her off?

To be fair, a lot of fan missions, especially the early ones in the 2000-10 era tended to be rough around the edges and I don't think most of them are actually remembered.
I think I have to disagree with you about this. Not the "rough around the edges" part, that's true, but that most of them aren't remembered. I think that most are remembered. I also think that many people's favorite missions come from this period.

Having to re-learn everything and then finding out about all the New Dark stuff.
Speaking from experience, if I'm away from Dromed for any length of time, it's like, "how do I make an air brush again???"
