huh? did I miss something, official EverQuest servers are not closing down anytime soon, there is 18th expansion coming out next month. Been playing the game for over 10 years on and off.

There used to be plenty of text-based MUDs around. There are still a few, but they're more or less history now. Not too many around to mourn them.
If in 2034 you can't play everquest, is anybody actually going to give a fuck? All the graphical technology and marketing in the universe can't change that an MMO is basically a chat room with orcs. By then, MMOs will be what, augmented reality? Direct hookups to your brain for true-sensation cyber sex?
The orcs in the chat room change, but they're just window dressing. Nobody is going to pine for everquest - it was just a background to the social aspect. Meet and greet for geeks.

In 2034, I wouldn't be surprised if there's still an install base for Ultima Online. Running on official servers too.
