I managed to find a slight bit of lava on the Sabotage at Soulforge mission (cheated myself to the mission)
Heehee, you mean the key combination cheat or the user.cfg cheat? Doesn't matter really, except one is less taxing on your pinkie.
But yeah, any changes you do to lava will be met with little opposition. It's like, the only thing in the game that is universally designed the same across different games and whatnot. I'll be happy to see the results. :D
Also, this is major nitpicking, but for some FMs with a dark theme, I've noticed the custom textures I remove so that the new water works fine, is alot darker because the designer made it that way. So I'm thinking I could just load up all the frames of my copied textures into GIMP and drop the brightness/gamma down several paces? That would help the water match the FM, and because I'm using FMSel it's not like I'm gonna need to replace those edited textures.
Otherwise, awesome work. And I'm admittedly growing more fond of env_maps... Still, my point earlier stands. Although I see you might be using env_maps for diamonds? :D

I managed to find a slight bit of lava on the Sabotage at Soulforge mission (cheated myself to the mission), but it doesnt seem to be the correct one, it's not really animated. If someone has a save of a proper location with animated lava i'll give it a try directly :) I'm currently replaying the game but its gonna take a while before i get to miss15.
The original textures are in Water and WaterHW. You need to look at any that start with an "L". L4in and L4out are the animated ones. (I don't know what the others are for.) But with only 5 frames, the lava animation is pretty poor.

Albert: yes i used the key combo to get there, use it all the time now when i'm modding. Do you want darker water? Not sure i understood your question. I can make a darker version, though this water is already darker than the original textures.
Hertzman: Doubtful, i would need to see it in motion and to replicate it would probably be hard except for color. If you can find / extract the UT water textures you could mod them into SS2 yourself, or i could do it for you (just send me the textures) but i cant release them officially ofcourse.
LarryG: yes i've found them, just need a save where there's lava so i can see how my textures will look in-game.

That would indeed be 100% perfect.. Really unsure how to accomplish anything like that though, but i will think about it, maybe i can come up with something :)

I like the cubemapped water. I think the reflectivity is too high though--both on the water and the gold loot in the video you linked--as it is it looks a little like cellophane. What kind of tweaking can you do to the cubemaps?

You can easily tweak it to your liking..
Instead of
env_map 0.07 2 tex\envmaps\vurt_envmap1Try
env_map 0.04 2 tex\envmaps\vurt_envmap1 instead
in the .mtl files (/fam/waterhw).

I figured out how UT99 water anims work. It uses a normal texture and then the engine
uses a ripple effect on the texture.
Ok, well it wont be possible to use that for SS2 i'm afraid. I'll take a look at the video again when i feel like doing some more water for SS2, maybe i can figure out how to make something at least sligthly similar to it, i do agree it would fit perfect :)

vurt: Actually, a better question would be if you could release a version with less shimmer to it? I admittedly wasn't phrasing it as a question, just that if it would be easy to just open it in an image editing suite (Like GIMP, which I have) to drop the brightness of the image down some.
But really, it's the fact that some FMs look better if the water doesn't shimmer.

just remove the whole line if you dont want it.. i've explained this at least three times now in the thread ;) maybe you meant the texture itself though, i can make an even darker version if so.
