Hello there,
Today I decided a thread in the Fan mission forum, because I'd like to see how many FMs with modern setting has been created in the past. To be hones, I'm one of the authors who has created several so called modern missions. And I'm not the only one :)
Some of the modern FMs - for example the Train and the Hotel in "Thief 2X", are enjoyable and I loved them. I loved also Pedro's FMs with settings on other planets. And of course, the Good Samaritan by Sluggs.
My question is - if you enjoy these modern FMs, would you mind seeing one or at least two such missions in Thief 4?

Well if they don't fit with the setting, if they are just curiosities (regardless of how much we enjoy them) then its a definite no.

1 train mission could be fair enough.

Well modern can be interpreted in different ways. The train mission in T2X fits the steampunk setting IMO.

IMO, one of the most important themes in Thief has always been the concept of magic vs. technology, that's why they have the whole ordeal with the Hammers and the Pagans (not to mention the Mechanists).
I wouldn't mind if they took it a bit further in that regard. Of course there's a limit, but if Thief 4 takes place chronologically after TDS, then the city could have developed a bit more since then and new technologies could be rising up.

Agreed. I think it would be awkward if suddenly, in the middle of missions with the original Thief-like atmosphere, there would be a couple of missions that took place in the modern age or an age that was just more modern that that in the original series. They just wouldn't fit in well. Unless you're thinking of a Thief-like game that has no underlying storyline or plot and just consists of a group of random missions. Then it might work. Maybe. ;)

I remember the Mirrors FM working very well, how it slipped from modern times back into the Thief universe (I've always loved the Narnia-esque "escape" into an alternate reality)--it was an excellent plot device. But it worked since that was how the story evolved, it drove the plot; it had a reason for happening that was plausible. Other than that, I'm not a big fan of "modern" settings. They're fun to play, but they don't add much to the greater story.
