Wheee. Picked this up the other day (yes, I'm two and a half years behind the rest of you), and it's good fun. I'm currently enjoying the disdainful manner of the System 7 controller :)
So far I've never managed better than "the lowest possible ranking" (i.e. bronze) for completing a mission, save for the "race" mission between DeWulf and System 7 for a hill-top energy pool, in which I managed silver. I've only completed each mission once, and then moved on to the next, so I've not been trying for better scores yet.
The only thing I can see in the manual regarding these ratings is "Try to complete each one with the utmost efficiency for added bonuses", which I take to mean in the fewest posssible turns? I presume this tends to be more or less a case of learning the map and where the enemy starts from earlier games, and making a bee-line for their central hub...?

Yup. Got it in one. :)

hmm... well I got gold on my first attempt for the final System 7 and the first Team Alpha missions. The second Team Alpha mission (Island Breeze) is just horrible. All that bridge-building! I didn't enjoy playing that one remotely as much as most of the levels, but I finally slogged my way through it with a bronze rating. My one piece of enjoyment on that one was flanking System 7, who had massive defences set up on one side, but was utterly unprotected on the other. The other amusing thing was watching NiceCo self-destruct by inadvertently reclaiming its own central hub! (I'd just missed hitting the hub with a crawler, and it was trying to safely dispose of the crawler, and didn't quite aim well enough :)

One stategy that works very well for achieving gold in Island Breeze:
[spoiler]Waiting for the others to use all their energy by building bridges.
building bridges doesn't affect your final scores. And is really easy to do in this mission.
Then launch a crawler. They won't have any energy left to defend themselves against it. :cheeky:
