Yup. Got it in one. :)
Not really: you can do much better and get higher rating faster by
going the opposite wrap-around way toward them, blocking their access to resources in a hand shape wherever they try and shielding forward areas/homebase from aerial attack and crawlers and take all their power pools.
Defend and them melt
all their everything in a final mess while you
blow joyous beer out yer nose .
I get some golds and lotsa silver that way, i.e.Do a 180 "polar route" quickstarve and torch'n'scorch quickly and make all aimed attacks hit well,
if not perfectly.
The EMP shield-downers and a fast missiling of best buildings or heaviest explosives lobbed while healing your necessary building is great. Constantly wreck their water connections, not every bridging panel, keeping them broke and unfocussed, especially with those triple mine-layers. Make sure you have protected balloons scanning well from all angles and keep/re-deploy when they die.
Information plus
strategic denial of resources plus
a quick dirk to the heart with an evil twist.
Then it's time for tea and tunes!

---------------------
I think reclaimers die against crawlers: I crawl
against them or keep triple mines as detectors at a distance. Missiles get them if you have the time and view-balloons and distance.

I just noticed something kinda cute, if entirely pointlesss :) You can click on the random spinning structure on the main menu, and then use your mouse to rotate it manually...
I just finished the last of the Team Alpha missions. I was alternating between progressing with the missions I'd not played, and trying to get a gold rating on the ones I'd already played. I have three bronzes to convert, and that's it (two from DeWulf, one of which has been driving me crazy... must be time to formulate new tactics; and one from System 7).
I expect I'll put the game aside after that, but at the price I paid I've more than gotten my money's worth out of it, so thanks everyone for the recommendation! I'd probably keep it installed permanently for the occasional quick skirmish game if it was smaller, but somehow it manages to take up half a gig... I'm not really sure how it does that...?? Sure it looks and sounds nice enough, but it's not exactly a graphical or audio showcase. moonbase.(a) and moonbase.he4 are the two big files at 397MB and 72MB respectively. Crazy.

Just curious, but has anyone ever used a tower? I can't really find much of a use for them as ballons seem to be so much better with the whole not dying on slopes and immune to spark/virus and not taking up a hub slot...
You can always just chuck a anti-air if you really want to scout with 1 energy, and it can defend itself!

Ahem. You actually did BUY this game? Cmon... ;)
What's so strange about that? I spotted it as a DVD-case budget re-release under the "Best of Atari" label, remembered it getting a good write-up in threads like this one, and plonked down the few bucks it was priced at. However, I do now want to know how it is that the HOTU version is just 50MB. Surely that doesn't expand by a factor of 10 on installation? The intro vids are separate from those two big files (and are just 15MB in any case), so what the heck is going on?
d00m: I frequently use towers. The low cost is handy early on in a game. And even if you hit a wall you can usually adjust the shot enough to send out another one safely, and you'll still have used less energy than a balloon. Scouting with non-scouting units isn't really scouting... their visual range is much too poor.

Balloons go up fast for info on energy pools and crawlers at start- FAST- information- at least three. Then towers while replacing balloons that get offed if they are doing the job.
Shoot down enemy balloons ASAP, especially human opponents'.

After all this, I guess I'm gonna have to buy myself a copy. And I just happen to know of a shelf that's holding up a brand-new copy at this very moment. Mine mine mine.
I just hope it's as good as you all say...

It's delightful and fun. The gameplay mechanics may be rather simplistic, but the strategy is deep and engaging.

At least a couple of the review links from aardvark's original post were still valid when I checked if you'd like some additional opinions, and there's a demo available if you want to try before you buy, but assuming it'll only cost you about $5-$10 I think you're pretty safe in any case :)

It's ten bucks at the local shop, for the boxed version no less. And of course, I forgot to pick it up. Tomorrow, tomorrow.
