Finally installed and started playing the damned game. Interesting. Looks like fun. I suck at it, but I'm sure I'll be able to kill some time with it.

The launching mechanic can take a wee bit of practice to really get used to, and obviously there are lots of units and weapons which all take time to learn about, but you'll get the hang of it!
Just make sure you take good note of the sort of angle you need to keep between cords, or you'll end up blocking your own progress :)

Done that numerous times already.
Is there any way to adjust the resolution without playing the thing in a window?

Yay! I managed it this time :)
Reclaiming all the crawlers is good as they tend to all take turns in the same place so you can get very good at hitting them.
Very satisfying to kill the oponents with a crawler :) Land it next to their hub and their AA gun detonates it for you :)
Humans who don't keep firing crawlers the same place are a real pain in the biosphere.

Not that I know of, but do be aware of several disabled-by-default game options that affect the game camera, and also the Track Outgoing/Incoming Fire buttons at the top right of the screen. They don't change the resolution, but they can help you to keep better tabs on what's happening, which is nearly as good :) Check the manual for details.

The problem is, my monitor doesn't adjust well to lower resolutions. At 640x480, the display is rather distorted, and the top and bottom of the screen aren't visible. Makes it hard to tell what some of the buttons are for.

I saw it mentioned there's a windowed mode, though I've yet to find it myself.

I believe it's alt-F5. That's how I'm running it now, but it's a bit of a pain in the ass if you move the cursor outside the game window.

So what are your monitor type and resolution?
NEC Multisync 17", 1024X768, TrueColour.

This is...
(hold on a minute...)
A Cornerstone CD2077A, a 20" nut-popper that was apparently quite the monitor back in it's day - which was around 1996. I've got it running at 1600x1200 and it's pretty good, although a couple of the corners get a bit blurry with very small text. Games run fine at 1024x768, but at lower resolutions things tend to get a bit distorted, with parts of the image pulled off the screen in one direction or another.
