I don't know about anyone else, but when I played DX, there seemed to be little ammo to be found anywhere - even though I checked as many places as I could.
It was tougher, IMO, to get through the first few opening levels because of this. I wonder if it's better that way (little ammo) or whether there should be more ammo to start with. Afterall, there are quite a few enemies to fight in the opening stages...
...unless you use stealth, in which case little ammunition poses no problem and you should be able to whizz through the opening levels as though you made them.
...
Have I just contradicted myself? Or have I found the answer to my convoluted question?

I find this is one thing designers frequently overlook. If you are a secret agent for a top level military operation, they are obviously going to have the funding to give you many, many bullets!!! It doesn't make sense to have the character start out with a single clip. Sure, it looks good from a game puzzle vantage point, but it completely tosses plausibility out the window.

Yes - I beleive that was the point I was trying to make...
And I have got DX now (just). A copy of a copy of a copy of the real game. Piracy at its teetering heights...

But on the other hand, JC is a seekrit agent not a combat soldier. Well, most of the time anyway. An agent has little cause to cart around an armory's worth of ammunition on an operation. Besides, ammunition is heavier and bulkier than video games often make it out to be.
When I was in the Army, an officer who was issued a pistol had a basic load of 2 15-rd magazines. I doubt an FBI agent or someone similar would carry anymore than that when on duty.

Again, it depends on how realistic you want the game to be.
DX is not realistic. For example, you can cart around a flamethrower, a pistol, a few medkits and a whole bunch of other stuff.
As a seekrit ayjint, I'd have thought you'd be supplied with all the equip you need to survive the mission...

I'd prefer if there were slightly more pistol ammo near the end. It's readily available near the beginning, but if you take the pistols route, things can become very stretched near the end.

I think the limited ammo was done for the purpose of persuading the player to "go stealth" I mean ionstorm *DID NOT* want DX to be a shootem up. Like Quake or Doom or whatever. They wanted it to be pretty realistic (getting shot in the head by a Sniper Rifle kills you) but fun and challenging at the same time. Imagine how different it would be if the player could just run around haphazardly at the beginning and kill the entire terrorist force with just his pistol. That would be annoying and would totally destroy the story of the game. Limited ammo also forces the player to actually think about the events that are unfolding. Rather than just blasting through killing everything in sight. if one could do that all the way through. The end of the game would be quite Confusing.
