[Bionic Commando]'s been out since mid-may.
Ah, it's because it only showed up on Steam on July 28. That's why I thought it was newer. That said, locally I really do think it
is a new release -- I remember spotting it on a shelf a week or so back, and noting that I'd not seen it before. So it may well be that Steam is just in line with the worldwide distribution plan.

Sacred 1 & 2. GRAW 1&2, plus Bionic Commando Rearmed
And nothing of value was lost.

well, losing a job is never fun.

Damn. GRAW 1-2 PC were great, and I also liked GRIN because they were exceptionally communicative (at the time of GRAW 1-2, lot of them were regular posters at ghostrecon .net) and kept in touch with the community.
Anyway, if anyone cares - from a GRIN employee:

We are still a bit shook up over what has happened as the studio had stabilized after the cutbacks made earlier this year. So everything would probably have worked out fine if it hadn't been for the problems we just faced with our publishers, which caused the studio to go down.
...
No one has left yet, and everyone is still employed by Grin, while we are waiting for what is going to happen. There is gonna be a big meeting early next week when we'll get more info.

Looks like GRIN might have also been working for Square on (
http://kotaku.com/5341365/grin-were-working-on-a-final-fantasy-game/gallery/) a Final Fantasy action spinoff. This is just so slightly conflicting, because while I don't give to shits about Final Fantasy, I can't help but wonder if it would've turned out different and in any way better/less horrible looking if tackled by a different developer, in particular a Western one.

Replace the dick girls with space marines, tone down the color pallete, and swap the melodrama with an edgy in your face attitude. Western Final Fantasy would be Gears of War with Jpop.

I'm trying to think of a counter to that view, and I honestly can't. Unless you had the original team from Interplay/Black Isle/Troika handling development, in which case I'd jump on it like a randy dog on his master's leg after a month cooped up in a kennel.
Since that's not going to happen though, what Square should obviously do at this point is farm out development duties to some Russian/Ukrainian dudes of repute. Maybe like the makers of Pathologic or Cryostasis.
Renzatic on 20/8/2009 at 20:50
That would be a pretty interesting thing to see, actually. If Square were to get Amano back to do the art instead of whats-his-face ten-zippers, throw in some Pathologic style surreality alongside a Final Fantasy Tactics style plot, you'd end up with...well...something like Carnivale the videogame.
Whatever happens, I'd probably find Final Fantasy considerably less obnoxious than I do now. I mean seriously here. I watched one of the Final Fantasy XIII trailers the other day, and the dialog sounded like a bunch of hip/cool one liners strung together into an awkward conversation. The whole thing felt like Square trying their damnedest to be as absolutely epic as possible. It was cheesy.

Hmmm, I guess I don't share as much sadness or fear in "our little beloved indies!™" dying. I mean, let's be honest here folks - if their games were good, they wouldn't be going bankrupt.
Look at the big companies like EA or 2K. Sure, we bitch about them all the time but at the end of the day, they bring us some real high quality that sells for millions. They may not be to the taste of TTLGers, but numbers don't lie - they make good games. Or at least, better games than the indies.
Honestly, as harsh as it may sound, I'd rather see the small devs fail and teach a lesson, than stay in the game promoting mediocrity. If you keep rewarding shitty designs, you will keep getting shitty designs. If we actually want to keep getting good games, we need to let the economical "survival of the fittest" take its toll every now and then.

Claiming that on a forum dedicated to the legacy of
Looking Glass Studios is... weird.
Unless the post is to be taken ironically ?
