no, because I can play ME2 without using the cover-snap at all, mario not.

I dunno about ME2, but in ME1 you can easily become powerful enough to the point where you never needed to use cover. I would be taking down Geth Goliaths (designed to primarily fought from within the Mako) with ease thanks to my Infiltrator's tech powers.

Some of the characters in ME2 do grow on you a bit. One that I'm surprised to actually like is EDI your ship board computer.
So far, I'm only about halfway in (just got the "investigate a ship" achievement"), and it seems to me that

There is a marked similiarity between the collectors and the borg. Both seem to be hive minds, show a remarkable ability to adapt, and work to find other races to add to the collective
Quick question - is it necessary or strongly recommended to use a saved character from ME1? I lost mine during a reinstall of windows and would prefer not to have to do ME1 all over again just to play the second one.

Yes, its very recommended. Not necessary though.
You don't really need to play it again, though. You can download a completed save for the PC version off the internet.

What are the benefits?

You get 'your' decisions to influence things rather than the Bioware chosen defaults. Plus extra bonuses if you had a level 60 character and other achievements from the first. It's not essential by any means.

If your imported character was level 50, you start at level 3. Level 60 gets you level 5. Both start you out with more resources. If you have the rich achievement in ME1, that also gets you more resources to start with. Also, you get the long service achievement upon the first completion if you import from ME1, though since the achievement bonuses are gone it doesn't mean much.
Finished it myself. Kind of annoyed that I did
Tali's subquest before I got Legion. Would love to know what happens if you show up to her trial for sending Geth parts that might turn back on to the fleet with a Geth in tow.
Gah. I'm a bit meticulous, so I guess I'm playing through ME1 again. Good job it's a fantastic game really!

If you're replaying ME1, you might want to consider binding slomo 2.0 and 1.0 in the configuration. There are a lot of parts in that game that benefit greatly from going twice as fast as default.
