How the heck are Deus Ex, Quake 4, and Star Wars ending up in this discussion?

No guns and not advanced tech, etc. Just swords, axes, bows, whatever

Oh hell, nobody uses guns in Jedi games anyway.
(Except in multiplayer.)

I was wondering about that too. :D Never played much of Deus Ex, unfortunately, but I almost could swear it has somewhat futuristic weaponry.

Quake 4 was pretty good, it's what that piece of crap Quake 2 should've been like in the first place.
Mindnumbingly generic and boring shooter giving itself too much credit?
Quote:
Quake 2's massive failing is that you never got a sense that you were part of a massive war effort, it was just a really dull and uninspired one man army corridor shooter the entire way through.
Because... you WERE one of the FEW survivors, if not the only one survivor? Herp derp? And how was Quake 4 any different, anyway? I don't recall fighting alongside my allies even once, and when there was something to do I had to do it personally. Some war effort that was.
Quote:
As dethtoll says, Quake 4 feels like Call of Duty in space a lot of the time, like you're actually a part of a war.
Which only proves both of you don't know what the fuck are you talking about. Quake 4 like CoD, hahaha oh wow!
Quote:
To be fair, Q4 owes a lot to Half-Life revolutionising the FPS genre, but Q2 utterly failed to live up to standards set by games that preceded it.
Hahaha, what standards? Care to name them? Or do you mean all that bullshit you wrote after this sentence, like "sound design".

On-topic:
I was doing this search a few years ago, and there were a few UT and HL mods that fit the bill. The fact that UT mods were relevant shows how long ago that was. I pretty much gave up looking after finding the Elder Scrolls series, with Morrowind and Oblivion covering most requirements.
If the brief is "Doesn't matter if it's medieval or not", do they have to be actual swords or are DX/SW/halo energy weapons valid?
On-topic, if the topic was Koki:
Quake 2 was enjoyable and really showed off those 3dfx lighting effects. IIRC there were a few hints dropped that other soldiers had survived and were involved in objectives across the complex - you can also encounter human prisoners in some stages. I feel the "military" feel could have been enhanced by having soldiers running past unbreakable glass or something to prove the point, but whatever I will write it off as an engine limit (although Anachronox would disagree).
Quake 4 was LIKE COD IN SEVERAL WAYS HERE THEY ARE
* Friendly AI that back you up. If you don't remember fighting alongside them, you are a speedrunning goldfish.
* The player must complete all of the important objectives, or singlehandedly guard the annoying tech who is doing so. This does detract from the team feel, but it is an acceptable sacrifice in the name of making an interesting game. Also unlike CoD, some of Quake 4 has a valid reason why only you can save the day. It was his sled.
Personally I preferred the body-horror industrial punk Quake II/4 setting to the medieval/lovecraft mess of Quake I, but Quake I was certainly more visceral.

I have a need to search for more sword games cuz TES games don't fullfil my needs. Not mentioning TES 1 and 2 that never got me interested, morrowind felt boring to me, and oblivion felt like bugs all over, lacked a good storyline and crowds and a more diversed fauna and flora, was mostly boring to play the thief role, and lots and lots of more things I won't tell now. Otherwise I'd fill a whole page.
Arx was funnier to play than those.
When I say "doesn't matter if medieval or not", I mean, take Final Fantasy, for instance, its not medieval and has melee weapons. It's just for the sake of an example, I know it's not a first person game. :D Arcanum is a good example too. They both mix swords and guns, but that's ok by me. If only Arcanum was in first person... would be a perfect game...
I actually have a slight preference for medieval sceneries, but I meant it for ppl to have a wider range of suggestions.
Btw, isn't there any game based on Shadowrun? (board game just like AD&D, but futuristic)
AxTng1 on 10/12/2009 at 14:57
Yeah, there is a Shadowrun FPS that I heard Bad Things about. If Crusaders of Might and Magic was Counter-Strike with elves, Shadowrun is Counter-Strike with elves and plasma guns. It may have swords.
...board game? :(
EDIT: Legends omm, not Crusaders. I have not played either. My Crusaders (from an ebay compilation, don't judge) came with a poster of Legends, which I put up and so saw far more of that than the game that provided it.

If Crusaders of Might and Magic was Counter-Strike with elves,
Crusaders of Might and Magic is a crappy platformer with very light cRPG elements. Avoid unless someone pays you to play it.
A CS clone with elves did pop up some years ago, but it isn't CoMM.

Yes. Shadowrun was originaly (as far as I know) a pen, paper and dice game just like Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, only more complex, harder to learn and futuristic.

There ya go, play Vampire TM: Bloodlines with the fan patch installed. Terrific game that, one of the best RPGs of the past decade.
