Moss arrows... - by CD Set

About the only time I use moss arrows is for a combination of hard floors & the need to move quickly - or, occasionally, for a combo of hard floor & a super-alert guard with something I need - such as in
Shadows In Our Blood.
Noisemakers: only to start fights between rival AI.

I like the fire arrows for getting rid of insect swarms.
Good grief! Would never have thought of that....

I think you can also use water arrows to get rid of insect swarms, but I think they removed that ability in Thief 2.

They didn't, and looking at the Properties, they can be dispersed with fire, water, gas, or "stench", which I guess means a burrick belch will take them out. Although, there's no burricks in TMA, so I'd have to test it in the Bonehoard, with the bug cloud over the burrick corpse and an angry live burrick.

I manage to finish some missions with only water arrows and the blackjack, but I probably use moss arrows second most after water. It's great for marble or tile floors in big room that you need to cross quickly while a guard's back is turned (or to run up behind him and KO).

Yeah. Being in a hurry, without being impatient, only because the time to play the game is limited, and having a method to cross a room without being seen or heard or interacting with AIs and even just to shave off some waiting time, is nice. Using moss arrows instead of noisy broadheads to activate switches is nice. Another use I employ a lot is mossing a surface down below me so I can jump down without a sound, and exploring vertically creates a lot of opportunities for that. Being able to play without ever using any tool but those that are necessary to complete the mission means that I can experiment a lot.

It really depends entirely on how involved I am as to whether I'll use moss arrows. If I'm totally (is there another word for immersed because I loathe that word?) ******** then I'll probably not think about it, I'll just creep.
I'm more likely to use a moss arrow on a lift/elevator because of that annoying clang that sometimes happens when I creep on and then press the button and ching, someone's heard me - and I haven't moved a millimetre.
I'm only now really appreciating the value of noisemaker arrows though. Otherwise, I like to try and use as few arrows of any sort that I possibly can while happily biffing everyone about the head.

I use moss arrows quite regularly actually. Often I'll use them to jump down from up high onto tile where guards are standing/patrolling nearby or to help me blackjack a guard who is patrolling on tile - don't know how you would do these things without them :erg:

Make the guards come to you. If you're in complete shadow you can make some noise (jumping, noisemaker, throw things, whatever) to get the guard to come toward you, then lean forward and blackjack them. The leaning lets you do it before they spot you.
Thief13x on 24/11/2010 at 23:04
Yeah, I've done that before but it doesn't work with all guards me thinks. Some are really jumpy and catch you sooner than others it seems.

I try to avoid forward leaning and then blackjacking, it feels too much like a bug.
In the OMs I only used moss arrows on my first 2 playthroughs, and not too much. In most FMs I don't use them, but I like it when it's almost necessary to use them. Eclipsed comes to mind, with its noisy power station.
