It's only worth hoping for because Carmack's already promised it so many times (I understand ZM doesn't have to care) and they've already released the SDK so there's not even that much more sourcecode left to release -- though they're admittedly important systems, but also quite dated by now too and it's not like it could possibly compete with their future games. Other companies have already worked with its full sourcecode too.
I hope it gets released anyway. TDM could really use it.

There is a possibility that ZM will say no. Though like Demagogue stated above, it's doubtful if they'll even care, considering how old the tech behind it is by now.
And it's doubly doubful anyone will say no to Carmack. You get the impression that he continues working on game engines only because he enjoys the shits and giggles of it these days. Piss him off enough, and he'll more than likely drop his old career all together and devote himself fulltime to his true hobby: shooting armadillos into space.
