after playing through thief 1,2 and 3 again i can honestly say that in my opinion, the seaside manor from deadly shadows is the most atmospheric mission of all. it also stands out the most in my mind because it has a completely different vibe to all the other missions.
1: the music is a beautifully crafted piece. simple yet effective in the way that it makes you feel a sense of sorrow. i actually felt guilty from stealing from the widow moira.
2: the storyline. it starts off with the usual 'steal this item' objective and then expands into a web of lies and corruption what with the guards and staff stealing whatever valuables they can pawn from the manor. it makes you feel like the only good guy there (although you steal as well but hey, its thief!:p )
3: the setting. waves lapping on the shore, rain pouring onto the roof, thunder and lightning, a well crafted manor and plenty of people to blackjack with not a hint of remorse due to there ulterior motives - well to lady moira anyway..
all in all a high quality mission to savour.

What I always found most intriguing about this mission was my frustration with not being able to help the widow. At first I was bothered by stealing from her 'till I realized that there was no way any of the money would ever stay hers, with the servants as they were. I doubted if she'd ever recover, but there wasn't anything Garrett could do about it. Someone once made a nice point on the forums, though, that the woman was living in a freaking *mansion.* Even if Garrett robbed her blind, there was nothing stopping her from selling the house for something just a trifle more modest and living perfectly comfortably.

I have to agree with you. The House of Widow Moria is an atmospheric mission. I tests your morality in certain ways. The lightning flashes over the windows and dreary sorrow music makes it feel like a haunted house with a story.
In fact I had to keep atleast 2 people alive in that house to not be creeped out.

I have to go with Trail of Blood from Thief 2. The whole mission is good, but that very last area in which you:
Initiate the cutscene with Viktoria. It's spectacular. The ambient noises all around you, the visuals are great with all the trees and vines. I can't put it into words what they did to accomplish that area; but everything about it creates fear. The fact that there are incredibly powerful tree beasts there is actually inconsequential. It's scary even with out them. They just make it horrifying.
There's 4 difficulty levels.
Most atmospheric? I cant compare so different levels, so here it is:
Best "mansion" atmosphere — looks like Widow Moira's. But yeah, I'm going to the bear pits tomorrow, do you wanna come with? :sly:
Best "Haunted" atmosphere — RTTC. Join us NOW!
Best "Abandoned terrain" atmosphere — DP's Lost City. And, if we count Gold instead of DP, that'll be… Kurshok Citadel. Count Nine for it.
Best "Magic Place" atmosphere — I think the Maw section of Trail Of Blood. Those Eye-plants are still creeping me out.
Best "Storytelling" atmosphere — Keeper Compound. The blue flame blazes, the deadly shadows amass, the pendulum swings in wider and wider arcs.
Best "Religious" atmosphere — Hammer Temple at Undercover. And the Word went before Him, on a breeze carrying our salvation…

although it's been dulled over time, when I first played it, the Lost City blew me away. Just the sheer scale of it, and knowing that this forgotten place was just waiting underneath the city, full of long-lost secrets. Kidnap kinda spoiled that for me...

Not Kidnap itself, but Mechanists with their rude archeology did it.

Presently? The Hammerite Temple in Undercover, although I don't like that it had so little action going on. Then again, I whacked everyone in sight with mr. BJ.
RTTC is also quite amazing, although I have to admit, I did it the way of the Indy.

Maybe yes. Anyway, I feel like to replay it on expert another (fifth? seventh?) time. But now, I'll take that explosive with me. As a gift for some… hoofed liar. :sly:

actually, considering what happened next, if Murus knew how evil the Eye was, he's a bit of a selfish git for putting his own eternal rest above keeping the eye secure in the old quarter. :laff:
