Just curious what you think is the most improved video game sequel, in your opinion.
I have a couple of the top of my head,
1. No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.s Way
I really liked the graphical update, the addition of an RPG-ish upgradable Skill System, and the new gadgets/weapons.
2. Gothic 2
I don't know that many consider that a lot of things changed between 1 and 2, but the world was so much bigger and, with the expansion, a whole lot of content, classes, and options were open to the player. I just thought they took the great base-product of Gothic and ran with it.
I am leaving some of the more obvious ones for someone else to use.

I didn't play NOLF2 and I've always meant to.
Max Payne 2.
Half-Life 2.

Half-Life 2
Hmmm... I was quite disappointed with HL2 (in comparision with HL1).

People are gonna post this anyway so I might as well object in advance:
System Shock2
Everything but the story has been improved upon. Also: monkeys. Still, I enjoy the first one more. Partly because the second's story looses some oomph once you know the twist.

No objection here:
Need for Speed: Most Wanted
Some game elements are radically different to its precursors, so to call it a true sequel is a slight stretch. Still it's tons more fun than any other of the series.

Marathon 2: Durandal
Bigger levels, better graphics, more variety and swimmable liquids!
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Just improved in every way. Okay, maybe less of a sequel and more a re-imagining. But still, the multiplayer is still one of my favourites of all time, and I'm not on about the bastardisation that was Enemy Territory (which was enjoyable, just not as refined as vanilla RtCW MP).
Sonic 2
Co-op mix up and the best in the series to this day.
Fable 2
Fable 1 had some great ideas but seemed constrained. Fable 2 removed all of those constraints whilst retaining the charm of the original and building impressively on its lore.
Baldur's Gate 2
Massively improved, with a bigger world to explore, more interesting characters to meet and a better story.
Micro Machines 2
Still the definitive Micro Machines to this day, and the addition of 4 player, a map editor and even 8 player made it epic. They've not made as good a version since, falling back on power-ups and an awkward 3D perspective.

Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear
It improved what needed improvement (graphics, AI, a few gameplay elements), and kept what was good (the basic gameplay, the planning, etc).

SimCity 2000?
Actually I've never played SimCity Classic, but it's hard to imagine that it's anywhere near the game that SimCity 2000 was.
Another vote for BG2. In the same vein, Icewind Dale 2 was also a massive step up from the first game.

Oh yeah, Civ2!
Again, probably the best in the series overall, and while original Civ was fantastic, it was nothing compared to Civ2.

Wow, I disagree with so many of these:
BG2: I thought BG was better, in part because the plot was a lot better and less player-centric. Plus it was a lot less linear, and had more joinable NPCs. Granted, the NPCs in BG2 were much more developed, but a lot of them were bloody annoying as well.
SS2: They were pretty close, but I still prefer SS1.
NOLF2: I could never get into it, so I guess I didn't play it much, but it never seemed to have the charm of NOLF and they seemed to make some annoying gameplay decisions.
HL2: absolutely not. I really tried but failed to like HL2, while HL was excellent. It just seemed like I didn't like most of the gameplay decisions they made, like the really low ammo carry limits, the fact that you always had to find the box of rockets to destroy any helicopter, those damn invincible turrets, and most of all, the way it was all so hideously scripted and linear, it played like a fucking film.
Max Payne 2: definitely. It took the original and made it all the more awesome in pretty much every way.
My contribution: Doom 2. Took the greatness of the first game and made it better in every way. Plus the Super Shotgun ffs.
