Wow, I disagree with so many of these:

SS2: They were pretty close, but I still prefer SS1.

Not the "most improved", but "Enemy Engaged: Commanche vs Hokum" gets an honourable mention (inspired by it popping up on GOG). Not only did it improve upon "Apache vs Havoc", but it integrated with it, allowing you to fly all four aircraft in the one game. Several developers have planned this sort of continuity for their games, but very few ever pulled it off. Awesome.

I guess I was subconsciously replying to heretic in advance :p

Elite Force II. I remember enjoying the original, but it just wasn't possible anymore after playing the sequel.
I miss the original's ability to genderswap, though.

You. Are. Mad.
NOLF2 wasn't
half the game NOLF was. The stealthgameplay wasn't as good. It was nowhere as funny. THE RESPAWNING FUCKING GUARDS. Just no no no NO! No. Ok? No.
Niiiet!Improved Sequels:Street Fighter 2
Wolfenstein 3D
Duke Nukem 3D
GTA 3
Burnout 3
All of them sequels so incredibly good they instantly made people forget all about the games that led up to them(even if the earlier games were good solid games in their own right).

Need for Speed: Most Wanted
Some game elements are radically different to its precursors, so to call it a true sequel is a slight stretch. Still it's tons more fun than any other of the series.
Great choice. I have it for PC (got it the week it released). The audio is incredible. The engine noises just rock. Add to that, he fairly open world, and all of the new gameplay additions like the crash breaker, the customised cars, etc...and you get one heck of a driver.

Fable 2
Fable 1 had some great ideas but seemed constrained. Fable 2 removed all of those constraints whilst retaining the charm of the original and building impressively on its lore.
I have Fable:The Lost Chapters on PC (pirated) and Xbox(bought it brand new, and like it a LOT better). I found it to be a fun little action RPG. There is quite a bit to do, tons of features and options, and it is set in an extremely cool and charming world. All around one of my top 20 games.
So, I have never played even 1 second of the sequel. If you don't mind expanding on your thought...would you mind sharing with me some of the stand-out features and whatnot? Thanks either way.
I also have to whole-heartedly agree with the nomination of Max Payne 2. I first got it on PS2. :nono: I didn't have the horsepower in my PC to play it. It had the absolute ugliest, blurriest, muddiest textures I have ever seen. It utterly RUINED what was one of the greatest 3rd-person, pure shooters ever. I am so glad I decided to get the PC version a few months later. To this day, with the resolution sky high, and the graphics maxed, it is one of the most gorgeous games I have played. An absolute masterpiece.
No wonder it has been ripped off so often. And honestly, even with the dozens of copycats out there, nothing has even come close to matching its elegance with such gorgeous visuals. Dead to Rights came close with the gameplay end, but suffered from horrible graphics.
Dead to Rights came closest, but it was just so butt ugly.

Oooo, another one:
FreeSpace 2, if only for MASSIVE BEAM WEAPONS SHEARING CAPITAL SHIPS IN HALF!
And that bit in the cloud...

I actually have yet to play ANY Command and Conquer game. Well, I bought and enjoyed C&C-Renegade, but that hardly counts. Don't know why, just never got around to it. :erg:
