OK, here are some suggestions from the old school:
Midwinter II: Flames of Freedom. In Midwinter you had just the one island and had to travel either by ski, cable car or glider. It took ages to get anywhere. Midwinter II had tons of different islands, a wide range of vehicles (including the legendary go-anywhere flying sub) and more varied mission objectives.
Dizzy: I preferred the sequels to the original as they changed the gameplay from an action platformer to more of an adventure.
Spellbound and Knight Tyme: two sequels to Mastertronic's Finders Keepers. Again the gamplay changed from action to adventure and was much better for it.
Target Renegade: better than the original Renegade IMHO.
Robocop 3: really cool (for the time) 3d graphics with a mixture of driving and FPS action. The first two in the series were simple platformers.
Microprose Grand Prix: The first one was good but I think GP3 was the best of the lot.

As a longer first-person Fallout 1.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening: Now, this one is entirely personal preference, but this tight little green adventure on the Game Boy came shortly after the SNES smash A Link to the Past, and in my opinion, surpassed all before it, and remains my favorite Zelda adventure to this day. I'll admit it's mainly nostalgia talking here, though.
The ending to that game was HORRIBLE, though:
That's it?! THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR?! A FUCKING GIANT WHALE WITH CARPETING DRAPED ON IT?! Seriously that was one of the worst reveals in gaming history, it was so awful.

You know, replaying Fallout 1 for the 10th time after just getthing through FO3 a few months ago, you're right- FO3
does feel like a first-person FO1. BR# may not like that and he'll probably post some bullshit about how stupid I am but I don't give a fuck. FO1 is one of my favourite games and I really, really liked FO3. If NMAtards can't handle that it's not my problem.

I should probably agree with you, but I dunno. Well after SMB was out and no longer of much interest to me, I was still throttling quarters into Mario Bros. I guess they were both classics.
