Mr. Denton or Miss Denton? - by Homoludens

What's everyone's opinion on the choice of gender for playing DX2? When the game launches will you choose to play a man or a woman? Why?
Also, will our selection of Denton's sex affect areas of gameplay and figure into how we strategize as we progress? For example, by playing as a woman will we be able to access places traditionally considered masculine, and will we have to use certain talents that may be exclusive to a woman to move forward? With so many NPCs social interaction could be affected depending on your gender, for example closing off possibilities of alliance while opening up material sources. There's also the possible factor of skills and how gender selection may affect them. Perhaps playing as a man may yield more physical strength, but as a woman could offer lightness and agility.
Thoughts, anyone?

I think it would be interesting to have a lot of different conversations depending on your gender choice. I'd say that physically, in this kind of "work", it shouldn't matter so much, but of course the people making the augmentations are, indeed, people, so maybe they would design the augmentations a little differently for their female and male agents...
One interesting thought would be to have the augmentations also have some kind of social effect... Perhaps you could have special augmentations for that, the "Enhanced Pheromones" from Shadowrun come to mind... So you would have to choose between an augmentation that enhances your combat ability or an augmentation that increases your social ability... Of course there should be corresponding rewards for "talk, don't fight" approach... More dialogue, more coding, more voice acting.... So I guess we can forget it.

Re: Augmentations being different - oh god, I hope not. That would kill the game for me right there. Oh, please Ion Storm, don't even consider ruining it by succumbing to any physical version of this Mars and Venus crap. Augs should be augs. No gender differences.
Nanoaugmentation should be the great equalizer, physically.
However, social issues are another matter. People do react differently to men and women, whether we wish it so, or not. I will tell you that the first game is very much more interesting being played as female even with minimal changes because there are so many more interesting male foils (especially Simons) for the female protagonist than there are for the male (Maggie Chow just isn't in Simons' league.) I don't say this as a promotion for our mod, but because I was rather stunned to find it happening that way. (I'm referring to a test version made a few months ago.)
As for places being accessible, there is already one gender-related place you'd better not visit in the first game - the ladies' restroom at UNATCO on your first visit. If you haven't done it, try it once - it does affect your game two different places (yes, it's only minor convos, but it's still an effect. )

I play most games as the female option. Did you know PC Gamer said DX1 was supposed to have a female option, but it was taken out to fit on 1 cd? Bah! I'd rather have 2 cd's.
Yes of course, make NPC's react differently. But I don't see any reason to make augs/skills different. Maybe make the woman more agile and the man more strong, but that would be it. This would be especially apparent if martial arts were implemented. Probably not worth is unless there were a 3rd-person view.

And it is our intention to put that option back in - that's what I was referring to when I talked about a test. Only this time, this *is* a shameless plug
And yes, it will probably have to ship on CD...
