The lack of a last name doesn't mean he never had family. As has been said before, somebody would've had to have given birth to him; somebody had to feed, clothe and shelter him until he could get to a point where he fend for himself on the streets. It just has more to do with being among the lower class, a street urchin, in that time period.

Well, I meant he has no family that he knows of. For all we know, he could've been left in an orphanage or something.

(Richard) Garrett was very young when his lower class parents died in a freak in-town accident. I'm pretty sure it was oxcart related. The streets then became his new parents.
