I've always considered that in visual media music, or even the lack of, can create or even deepen a mood when properly used.
It makes me think that a piece of gaming music has gone beyond the call of duty when it can be listened outside of the game and still stir something inside of us, wether feeling or thought.
I'm sure that if I dig deep enough there will be individual threads dedicated to X or Y game's score/soundtrack, maybe even a thread dedicated to gaming music. Well, pardon then my intrusion, but I'm creating a new one since I didn't found an old one.
So, please, share with us some of your favorite tracks from the games you've played over the years. Heck, even games you've never played. Only two conditions I ask that you respect:
1. That the music was made for a videogame originally (if it was later used in another context, it's cool).
2. Music's a very subjective thing, so one person's personal favorite may be boring to another, with that in mind this is a share-and-comment thread, not a fling-shit-'coz-mine's-better-or-yours-sucks thread, we're not asking what's good or bad, so keep the bickering outside of here (yes, I'm looking at -all- the troublesome regulars).
With that in mind, welcome :)
Here's my initial grain of sand for the thread:
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kuz8rHq1BaE&feature=related) 2nd Part of the Myst Soundtrack (my favorite song's the first one that plays).
Enjoy, share and comment, plz :D

Just a bit of CnP.

Eva - Got to love Castlevania music....particularly, I prefer Rondo's original Vampire Killer. Mind you, this version's pretty sweet too :)
Nice piece on Lunar, never played any of the Lunar games, any good?
Ah, great FF, great song....I'm very partial to VI's OST. Specially the theme when you roam the skies :) Epic stuff...
Yes, did liked the SH 2 intro, never been much fond of such type of music, but here it nails it just right...no one can imagine the scary creepy fuckfest the game is from this music....geez. The other piece is also shaky and groovy in a good way. Unf!
Never played SH 4, didn't had the interest.....but the piece is hauntingly captivating...nice voice.
Loved what they did with the remixed BC: R music, Hell yeah!
Tristam Village.....classic....depressive....oppressive....but in a calm, mellow, I'll-die-slowly-and-quietly kinda way. Shame Blizzard store doesn't sell Diablo....
Never played any of the PoP after SoT, but I had a feeling the music would be epic, specially in the trilogy's endgame, eh? :) Lovely pieces, both. A little hint of middle eastern sound...or what we Westerns may find oriental.
Ah, the Medal of Honor series is indeed famous for its epic scores....I remember the chorus in MoH: AA's menus....oh yes. Great stuff.
FF VI....Oh yes, -this- was the theme I meant.....one of my top 5 favorite FF song.
I never found any FF to be a PoS, just some more interesting than others, but yes, the intro score was something....damn....
And yes, FF VII....if you're going to mention FF VII, you gotta mention Sephiroth, his theme's amongst the best, as cliche as he may be nowadays....love the orchestral version (but I still prefer Kefka as FF main villian.....his theme is also pretty awesome).
Amazing stuff, Eva!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
nicked - I've heard so much about the TA game, since it was released, but never got around to playing it....hmph.....with that said, such music makes me yearn more for it.....damn son, great stuff. Also, piano FTW!
Ah, Unreal and UT's music was always awesome for a dance or two B-)
The Dig....wish Lucas would retake some of its Adventure roots and pop out a few games...epic piece....slowly builds up to you...
I should play Icewind Dale one of these days.....one of the few Infinity Ending rpgs from BioWare that I've yet to play....hrrrrmmmm.....
RAAAARRRRRR, QUAKE VIOLENCE!!!!!
Awesome pieces, nicked ol'boy!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
dethy - Zelda....you need to innovate, dear game franchise, cool as you may be, you've stagnated some...also, awesome guitar medley!
Holy crap....that Needle Man piece is frikkin' shaky awesome....damn!
Duck Tales had cool music....and this version wants me to fuck a duck, hot stuff, dethy.
Bionic Commando....awesome game, awesome remake, awesome music....my favorite personal tune, though, is from Area 12 (original NES, Albatross level in Rearmed). Classic evil....
Mega Man and jazz keeps surprising me, more plz...
Manhunt was a dark game....love this tune.
Aces high, dethy!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Great selection everyone, keep up with the great work, plz. :)

(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQc-pZv7Dlo) Super Castlevania IV, which has the best version of Bloody Tears in my I'm Very Fucking Right And You Know It opinion. Sure, the rock opera stylings used in the rest of the series are fun, but the baroque used in IV fit the mood of the series a helluva lot better. Or at least it did til Konami took it in more anime directions.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlLxN2QqDZc) Final Fantasy IV (II when I played it). I doubt I would've enjoyed this game nearly as much if it weren't for the soundtrack. While not nearly the best FF in the series, it and FFVI have the most memorable soundtracks of the bunch.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmGp_uMqAoo) Shadowgate. There's something almost magical about NES chiptunes. Probably childhood nostalgia. Whatever it was, Shadowgate, for a game consisting of a bunch of still pictures and menus, was about one of the most atmospheric games I had played up to that point.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlGDKfgz4fA&feature=related) Batman NES. Sunsoft were the masters of NES chiptunes. Want more proof? How about...
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwn-9IiO3MM) Journey to Silius. Yup. They were.
Dethtoll already did Bionic Commando, so I'll just add my support to his opinion. When I was 10, I'd go running out into the woods at breakneck speed with a rope and a toy gun I painted white, singing the Area 1 music as my theme song. Yeah, I was a teetotal dork, BUT SO WERE THE REST OF YOU! DON'T JUDGE ME!
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1dneoKn9uo) Crystalis. While not necessarily the greatest music I've ever heard put out on the NES, it was catchy enough that I still find myself humming tunes from it to this day. And I haven't played Crystalis in years. Figured that made it good enough to include on my list.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33d6EK2HykM) Secret of Mana. My first SNES game, and one of the top 5 best soundtracks of any game on the system.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aM2TtyX4iQ) Final Fantasy Adventure. Or the first Secret of Mana game if you prefer. Great music from such a small system. Then again, the thing was practically on par with the NES musicwise, so it's no surprised the thing had some games with some good tunes.
...and tons more, but I leave it at that for brevity sake.

Renza - Love any Castlevania tune, but SCIV was the first one to make me melt....love the beggining of the Clock Tower theme :)
FF IV, nice overworld tune!
Ah, I remember this game...very good old classic NES tunes....hail to the 8-bit!
Streets of Desolation's the name of the song of the first Batman NES level....awesome tune, awesome game, awesome soundtrack...
Silius, wow....another great classic....
Crystalis theme in my head for humming....argh ;)
Secret of Mana's music is beautiful, the intro alone makes me almost weep....very cool tune that you posted :)
FFA....holy shit, I played this....gameboy sure could pack a musical punch, eh?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bluegrine . C & C Hell March forever! :D The defining rts tune for warmongers....C&C was always rocking soundtracks :)
Good ol'QII....a bit of prog, a bit of metal....a whole lot of love, fuck yeah!
Always bet on the Duke, love the intro music....almost sounds like good porn :D
Killer Instinct had cool 90s music, I like....:D
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now for my turn!
Some 8-bit tunes:
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypNPxwnppU0&feature=related) Solstice intro music....holy fuck.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UknIyWcwAU) Go-go Master Blaster main theme!
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGq9VjJXVh8) Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse 1st level song...I was instantly hooked.
And here's one for you gameboy lovers....(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOKPIG23vgY) Marin's Windfish Song
*cries*Great stuff :)
Sulphur on 5/8/2010 at 23:14
Oh yeah, Castlevania III. Also some of the the best NES music of all time atmosphere-wise. (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DEZSC5FceA&feature=related) Proofity!. Haha, also (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAX1jyELGcc&feature=related) this. Pure coolness.
SNES Era: I think I've achieved something here if I'm the first person to whip out the amazingly trite triple-power-combination of Chrono Trigger: (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJtwEpQe6w0) Schala's Theme, (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lW1m_55E4s4) Corridors of Time, and (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CW6kLFyyi8) Battle with Magus.
FF VI: Every-fucking-thing. But especially Tina's Theme, Cyan's Theme, Celes's Theme, Edgar/Sabin's Theme, Ghost Train, Mystic Forest, Slam Shuffle, Devil's Lab, the opera ((
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l31SUW-nP5U) actual live opera version! [in English, sadly]), the battle themes, Searching for Friends, Dancing Mad, and the two ending themes. Fuck me, that OST is
loaded with awesome.
Terranigma's OST always struck a chord within me. Simple melodies, but very affecting. I loved listening to the (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8KMZQEoi28&feature=related) overworld theme back in the day, it's pretty lovely.
Crysta's (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmmN-13uDS0) town theme is the very definition of pastoral.
And the penultimate, bittersweet track that plays as Ark comes back to Crysta finally at the end of the game, and spends his final day there: (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcPS2BQ9EHA) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcPS2BQ9EHA.
PS Era: Uh, almost everything from Chrono Cross. Seriously. But a few highlights:
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laMvJf9UNdc) Scars of Time, quite possibly one of the most energetic opening themes to an RPG ever.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROKcr2OTgws) Dreams of the Shore: one of the saddest tunes ever composed.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlIcS34HhOI) Another Termina: One of the things that Mitsuda is absolutely brilliant at composing is festival themes. And this is one of his best.
I'm a PC Era:
This leetle game called Mechwarrior 2. Redbook audio when almost everything else was stuck with MIDI or some compromise or the other. Awesomeness.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RB0oxICsbOI&feature=channel) The coolest fucking track to drive a Mech to EVER.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSgpH-0L91Y&feature=related) Also cool. Perfectly timed stabs of piano, and fantastic use of the main theme.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJ0LAs9KiXc&feature=related) Dramatic fucking escalation. Also, militaristic snares for the win.
Beyond Good & Evil (well, technically Xbox and PS2, but nevermind): (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9xHOWHjYKc&feature=related) Home. Says it all, really. One of the most tranquilly beautiful tracks in a game ever. BG&E also has some great battle themes, which I don't have the patience to link to. Just get the entire soundtrack (Ubisoft released it for free - mirrors (
http://www.myspace.com/hyllianmusic) on this page).
Baldur's Gate 2 had great music, but I really liked the simplicity of the (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPOgQlfFsN0) Romance theme out of them all the most.
And Ultima's forever immortal Stones, done to perfection in IX's chamber version. If there's just a single track from this mega-huge list of mine you're going to listen to, listen to this one: (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_MyYiO0rqo) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_MyYiO0rqo
