My biggest problem with playing Thief these days... - by lost_soul

I was able to experience TMA and TDP (in that order) for the first time ever in small storage-room-turned-office at a friend's place, where the one frosted window of the office had a piece of cardboard cut to fit and taped over it, with a bookshelf covering the openable sliding half. If I turned off the overhead light, I could regulate how much light came in by how widely the door was opened. I wasn't able to use headphones all the time, but it was intense when I could. That was in 2001, and I haven't found a more suitable environment or game time opportunity since, but I do have a couple of limited daytime relief options, and am mainly awake at night, anyway, so most of my computing time is while the sun is down. There was a window of a few months where I took a large cardboard box, cut the top off, rested it on it's side on a desk with the opening facing away from the wall behind the desk, and placed the computer inside to keep it in the shade.

Are you telling me you first played Return to the Haunted Cathedral in that storage room?

Yes.:D And I didn't know I could backstab undead, so that experience has never been topped. The Cradle came well after I knew the tricks, so the two "BOO!" scares were the scariest moments.

Isn't playing Thief already spoiled a bit when you know that it's day outside? I could only play this at night if I wanted the full (tm) experience. I play some other games at daytime but could never do that with Thief unless it was about editing or trying something.

Not if the game immerses you, and shutting out the word helps that. If I can temporarily forget the room, chair, monitor, keyboard and mouse are my actual immediate environment, and that I'm not really mostly sitting still, even for a second, because the game pulls me in well, the time of day isn't an issue.

I do play Thief (1 and 2) in the dark and without too much noise near me, so yes, preferably during night. Sometimes, I play it during the day but it's not the same. It's like I'm just playing without the same attention when I'm playing in the night. It's like I play more goofy style. If there is too much light and reflections on the screen, I just give up.
Scary missions played in dark and silence just gave the chills and sometimes, I surprise myself to hesitate playing them :P

When I can, I like to play in the same setting that the Thief mission takes place in. So if it's a horror FM, I go out to the graveyard; if it takes place underground, I break into the Church's crypt; if it's a fortress mission, I head down to the local fort and play there. :joke:

Blankets over all the windows works for me; day or night. A major distraction (while living in an apartment & lately in a house just off a busy highway) while playing during the night has been passing cars whose headlights flash thru the blinds. Of course, until you've memorized the furniture placement of the room in which you're playing, getting up to get a drink can be a tad hazardous in a dark room. Also, cats & dogs don't always let you know you're about to step on a tail beforehand. ;)
