I had problems with the end of this too. Do you have any flashbombs? That's what helped me out. I had one ready and as soon as I landed I threw one. I also found that you can't sneak up on him. Hitting him from behind doesn't seem to work. You need to run up to him face-to-face and whack him with the sword. I'd never have completed it without the flashbombs though.

I do have one flash bomb left I beleive. I had to use the other early on for the two guards in front of the church.
Off hand I don't know if anyone else has found the authors secret stash in the church. I have the "Star of Speed". If I could tie it to a key it would REALLY help. Never done that before and don't know if you can. It would sure help in getting out of the water. My other complaint about fighting him would be besides getting out of the water there are few areas to get out at which I don't get caught on and the flash bombs effect disipates so quickly that unless I can get out of the water sooner I'm dead no matter what.
To top it all off I had played the level through all the way to that point without getting the holy sword and managed to get behind Monroe without being hit and using the stone portal that you frob. When I came back I assumed after difficulty and reading for help in the forum's that he must only be SO sensitive since I was down there already and escaped without killing him so now he's pissed.
So since I hadn'd made incremental saves for good measure I started over and made sure I had everything before dropping down there this time. No change. *SIGH* I think I've put about 7 hours into this one counting both play through's. I'm going to take a break from it and play a few other levels in the meantime since I've reloaded this so many times.
Thanks for the suggestion. When I come back to it I'll try the flash bomb. Hopefully however I'll be able to tie the
"Star of Speed"
to a key so I don't have to waste precious time moving through the inventory:erg:

Hi.
An old thread, I know, but if anyone's watching...
I'm having trouble in the Halls of Water.
I swim up the column, forward to the hole in the pipe, then up. but as I exit the pipe I always die instantly.
What am I doing wrong?

find another way.
frobbin hood on 21/3/2008 at 17:49
fibanocci,
I've ticked everything except kill Monroe. The walk through says I need the key for the red door in the fire halls.
This is supposed to be in the water halls but I can't find a way in.

At the top of the red carpeted stairs that lead to the red portal. I've walked through the portal and have gone left into the water halls. I've found the waterfall leading upwards and have gone into it. I swam to the end and came upon the broken pipe. I come up for air and INSTANTLY I DIE!! No matter what I do, I can't get up into the area that pipe leads into. I know there is a fire elemental that is supposed to be in this area but I've checked for him and he's nowhere to be found. What am I doing wrong here? Even the walkthrough says I can just mantle up on this pipe and drop below into another pool of water. I haven't seen anything other than a brief glimpse of air before I die. I make the fire injury sound right at first and then I get the splat sound I make if I fall from a really high place and die.

There is a bug associated with the water part of this mission. You can get into that part from another spot later, so just skip it for now.
This has me interested, because I am close to finding the maximum loot now, and the FM creator has hinted that there is loot to be found in this water area. How do I get to it from the other side?

Having finished this mission on Expert in 2 hours 43 minutes, with 4017 out of 4172 loot, i've got mixed feelings about Sharga's "Mansion of Chaos".
On the positive side are the nice briefing movie by Lazarus at the start, the use of old forum members (like doaal and KoMaG) in texts throughout the game, and the strong narrative about a group of people whom, to escape the influence of Hammerites and Mechanists, establish a new town for their ruler Lord Monroe, who turns out more than he appears to be. It's quite a horror story this one, turning into quite a nightmare for the townsfolk and humanity as a whole. The writings, most notably the ones from the Sounds from the Woods, make an interesting read, with nice references about the Trickster and the events in T1 :thumb:. Furthermore, there's a large variety of enemies; from guards and undead to all sorts of beasties (like bug- and ratbeasts) to deal with.
Negative aspects on the other hand, which sadly dominated my experience, are things like the quest to acquire the Holy Fire Sword. This essential goal can be easily overlooked and before you know it you end up in front of the Leaf-man with no means to kill him and no possibility to get back afterwards and get this sword, meaning you have to load an earlier save game or start over  (Hint: make sure you create multiple save games throughout the level). At one point, the player is transfered back to the town, is unaware he ought to look for this sword (no objective is triggered) and might stumble upon the proper course. It's just as likely that he doesn't however, merely sees it as a handy shortcut and continues to follow the same route all over again. And if the player manages to find the correct path, hints during the quest are sometimes vague or not present at all, forcing the player to rely on the walkthrough or the main thread for spoilers, to prevent getting totally lost.
Another critic might be more personal, but the mission was too long for my taste. The inside of the manor, containing similar surreal rooms and areas as those in Constantine's manor, makes for a special atmosphere but should've been smaller. Due to a lack of directions and hints, confusion and frustration eventually take over at some point and the endless hallways filled with beasties end up becoming a drag. But again, this might be personal.
Overall, it starts promising (in the town and the first part of the manor) but it falls prey to disorientation and lack of directions halfway through the game :erg:. A pity, as it's apparent Sharga's did a decent job with this mission, that serves as a sequel to the Maw of Chaos from Thief 1. The story is extensive, with a good progression, and well told. The introduction by Lazarus is top notch and a good attempt is made to create interesting and special environments. But because of it's flaws, due to which too often the player has no idea what to do or where to go, and because of the ending described above, it was hard for me to properly enjoy this game. Too bad. Luckily Sharga's 2nd attempt at a FM, Swamped, turned out to be a lot better and more entertaining.

Super healer, Sharga's secret scroll and Star of speed are hidden in church behind the locked door (near the start point), but how to open locked door?
