I'm not sure I understand how TDM relates to this particular topic at hand. Care to explain?

This project could be made using TDM, sans console ports. Most of the combat system is there, except for slaps and kicks which could be coded in, a list of (
http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Universe) faction names is available, and you can do T2 style cutscenes (like T2X) or even T3 style in-game cutscenes/flybys (seen in (
http://www.thedarkmod.com/missiondetails/?id=18) NHAT). The Camelot plotline would require at least one good castle to be built, and your fairytale missions might require some fancy new AIs (hard to make). I bet you would want a knight in full armor or even a knight on horseback. We have horses and I think someone has put an AI on horseback by now.
If you pay Stephen Russell enough cash, maybe you can obtain his voice (make a flexible crowdfunding campaign once you can prove to people that the project can be completed). Alternatively, maybe voice synthesis technology will advance enough by 2020 for you to violate his personality rights. Or you could use "Garrett's apprentice" as the main character.

There's no amount you could offer SR to voice Garrett for a fan community-made project, since it would be a violation of Eidos' IP. He's already made that clear in the past to the TTLG community. Plus the Dark Mod team has made it clear from the beginning that they will not in any way sanction any project which uses Thief IP, so there's that too. So nothing's preventing someone from making a large campaign which is a spiritual successor with new characters and setting, but a direct sequel using Thief IP would only happen off the grid, and I can't imagine anyone signing up to put in years of work for something off the grid.

I always wanted to know what happened to the Hand Brotherhood. They disappeared after TG. Huge potential there for a cool faction that's been left basically untouched.

I for one like the idea about the setting.
The story would have to be refined.. a lot :tsktsk:
but still... I don't see an Indie game developer publishing something that can match the original thief.
It would have to have a modern engine, aimed at sneaking, with good AI to match, and as I haven't seen that in ANY game since thief,
I don't believe anyone would be interested in making one from scratch, nor by building upon an already existing engine.
Wouldn't SR do the voiceacting if one could avoid getting into the EidosIP? I mean, even if the game wouldn't stare garret at all, wouldn't be called thief, and be "just" a stealth first person thieving game, for most of us here it could still be a sequel to thief right?

Sure, if you don't touch the Eidos IP and can afford to hire SR to do voicework, it would probably work.
