My kingdom for a stable DooM port... - by lost_soul

For the longest time, I've wanted a handheld version of Doom that doesn't suck. The GBA versions were *almost* there, but the music was butchered in the first and they lack pwad support. I've got here an old Treo 650, and apparently there is/was a version of DooM ported to this thing at one point.
I tried to get it running, but I failed. It requires you to use some sort of UDMH program to free up dynamic memory in order for the game to play. But come on! This thing has a massive 32 megs of RAM and a 300 MHz processor! Given that I played Doom on a 486-33 with 8 megs of memory, I'm not asking for the impossible here.
Has anyone played DooM on a Treo 650 before? How'd it work?

Just buy an iPhone or something and get Doom Classic, ported with oversight from Carmack himself. Problem solved.

No custom wads there though. There are apparently a few ports of Doom for the (
http://www.openpandora.org/) OpenPandora, but they're basically just ports of any Linux-compatible source mod, and may not perform well on the Pandora's specs.
So far I'm just playing Doom on my netbook when I want it "portable", but I agree a better solution would be nice (and I don't particularly want an iPhone).

Carmack released the source code for Doom Classic, since it was based on PRBoom. The free version of Doom Classic will work with any IWAD you have on hand, so Doom 2, Final Doom, etc. Adding PWAD support wouldn't be too hard.
