I'm a bit late to the party here, but I certainly agree with the gripes about saving checkpoints vs quicksaving. I simply have neither the time nor the desire to repeat the same set of tedious action sequences over and over again. I remember playing God of War and screaming in frustration during the annoying rolling/spiked log sequences near the end. What a pain in my ass!!!
At any rate, fett, I just wanted to recommend 2 fun PS2 games that let you save anywhere:
Summoner 2
Drakan: The Ancient's Gate
You can probably get them for less than $10 each. Enjoy. I apologize if someone has recommended them already, but I didn't really feel like reading all 6 pages of this thread.

I'm going to vote AGAINST Drakan. I enjoyed the Drakan demo on PC, but never got around to getting the full game. I eventually picked up the PS2 game and played it for a little while...
And got completely and utterly bored by the long swamp area they put you against at the beginning of the game. Never mind that the hack and slash combat mechanics are extremely awkward and dated at this point. Maybe it picks up again later when you can actually fly again, but I was completely turned off and sold the game.

I really fail to understand why one can't be both. Why do people seem to have this one-or-the-other mentality? The only reason I don't play more console games is because I primarily play FPS.

ok I explain for the mens
PC Gamers are bespectacled and live hunched over a keyboard surrounded by coffee mugs and Linux Bibles.
Console Gamers have three bellies and live sprawled on a stained sofa surrounded by Extra Large Cokes and Family Buckets of the Colonel's finest.
I don't consider myself to be in either of these categories, so I'm allowed to like both whilst being neither :)
Anyway, I rather think people should like both. Burnout Paradise was made for being sprawled on the Sofa with a beer and a joypad and dukes of hazard style whooping. Baldur's Gate was not.

This.
I like to be able to choose the platform too. I considered Dead Space and Batman for PS3 but the mouse control won it for PC versions. I'd never want to play GTAIV or Mirrors Edge on PC though, and not because of bugs but because there are some games I like in the living room, on the sofa and on the big screen.
FPSs are more suited to PC. Fighting games on consoles. And so on.
Sort your life out fett. Just because you quit the church and then became a satanist doesn't mean you have to play the same game with PC and console games.

I think it's mostly because people don't usually have money to get multiple machines to play games on. I mean, I couldn't ever justify myself to buy both Xbox360 and PS3 for example. Buying a console to begin with is in the fringe. Anyways, after buying hardware, for a reason or another, people have to convince other people that their own choice was the best one.
june gloom on 2/1/2010 at 23:13
Sounds more like they have to convince themselves.
For what it's worth, all of the consoles I have ever owned have been gifts. I intend to buy a PS3 on my own though, as it looks like I'm going to have to.

I never see what the big deal is anyway. If you decide the console isn't for you, sell it and save up for another. They aren't that expensive, especially now.
I'm disappointed in the Wii in that I've not seen/heard of any games that really make use of the motion controller that aren't fun sports/party games. My brother has one and I've played Metroid and Zelda on it and the motion controls could easily have been emulated with a traditional controller with the same effect imho. FWIW the best use of motion control I've personally experienced was in the missile launching sections in Heavenly Sword for PS3; the "twing-twang" bits were tremendous fun.
If I'd bought one I'd likely have sold it or also got a PS3 because the Wii on its own wouldn't be the console for me.

I have a Wii, but it's rather telling that I haven't bought a single game for it this year.

For Zelda? Yeah, all the motion control crap in it could easily be emulated on a regular pad. They did just that for the Gamecube version after all. Metroid though? Not so much. It's the one game that justifies the Wiimote in my opinion.
The closest analog for the Wiimotes function in Metroid would be a mouse, and a mouse just ain't all that fun to use from a couch. Plus I really like swinging my arms around to grapple and pull doors off of walls.
