I like to stop by once in a while and see what Eva and Koki are up to.

Every tried to surf the web on a console?
Yes. 10 years ago. With a mouse and keyboard, too!

Juggling cables, TV input sources, controllers, discs, console UIs, download managers, etc. is an utter chore.
Seriously, it's not though.

But I've since realized that there is one simple point that renders any argument purporting the benefits of consoles impotent:
there are three of them.
There are three "one simple points"? :erm:

He means there are three consoles, so playing all the good console games is gonna put you out at least 1000 bucks for hardware.
In effect, there are two consoles. If you want to play the two or three good Wii games there are, just find a buddy and see if he'll let you use his, or "trade" for a week.
As for me, I generally favor consoles titles over PC. Why? Its called Renting, which allows me to play more games than the 2-3 that are worth buying each year, for not much more money.

Now
I have to be the designer;
I have to sit and figure out what seems like a fair challenge.
You make it sound like knowing when to use quickload and when to not use it takes a great deal of effort. It's a simple common sense calculation that takes your brain less than a second to process. As I stated in my earlier Thief analogy: if I've exhausted every means the game provides to me in trying to rectify a situation (flash bombs, health potions, running and hiding, etc.) and I still get killed, gee, I guess the only choice I have left it to
reload. How long do you think it takes your brain to process that?

You know what else is bad design? Not including a quicksave, so that the player is forced to play the same sequence over and over again until they get bored and quit. Sure, a quicksave can be exploited, so can AI. Limiting the number of saves is a better option (including a difficulty which limits saving is even better). The point is, a player is aware that loading a quicksave every time he takes damage is an exploit and will take the fun out of a game, just as you know that standing on a table and taking out all the guards on the level with a bow will take the fun out of Thief. Putting in a super-powerful weapon is different. Yes, it is bad design, but a player will feel less like a cheater for using it, because it is within the game world and less immersion breaking.
Except for limiting saves, I agree with everything you said. Quicksaves are already limited by default: usually, each quicksave overwrites the previous one. I don't think you should limit hard saves, if only because some like to keep saves around to skip to their favorite parts of games when they play them later. I'm not saying that it's a bad concept, just that I wouldn't like it, and I bet others would agree with me.
That said, I think we've run this conversation into the ground, and now that I look back and see that we're punctuating real topic of this thread, I think it's time we end it.

You know what is bad game design?
This debate being meaningfull in the first place.
All this crap wouldn't matter at all if our games weren't saying "you can't do this bit? Oh ... well, I'm going to keep repeating the exact same thing untill you can!"
Yeah, I'm feeling idealistic today ...
