I meant neck size. Predictive text error!
But I knew he would be overweight, because that's the main cause of sleep apnea. Ventilator my ass. When he has a heart attack it'll no doubt be because he got the wrong drugs, and be nothing to do with the risk factors his lifestyle have bestowed. :banghead:
Koyla - you're amazing. You can diagnose appendicitis without histology! Surgeons can't even tell with 100% certainty when they can SEE the appendix.
And not using ice? Poppycock. Not giving pain relief because it masks the severity of the pain went out years ago. I guess everyone is messing up with all this iv morphine we give in cases of suspected appendicitis then!
Protip: your old wives tales are not equal to real medical knowledge.
And here is the rub - there are bad doctors out there, no doubt. Some by design, some by dint of just beeing human. But if you're not trained in something accept that you likely don't know as much as those who do. I've never met someone who has said something along the lines of "all doctors are scum" who didn't then go on to prove themselves an idiot.
You've just become the latest on the list.

I think the point being, at least for me is I don't automatically trust doctors..they make mistakes..sometimes serious ones. Had a HMO doctor who misdiagnosed the pain my wife was experiencing and diagnosed a urinary tract infection..well a while later she was being rushed to emergency surgery because a cyst on her ovaries exploded.. 3 years and 13 surgeries later they finally got all the infection out, along with most of her intestines. Trust doctors? not me, and I don't give a rats patootie if they dont like me researching every damn medication and treatment they give me because if you are not proactive in your healthcare you are a fool.
Now, fairly recently I was hospitalized for congestive heart failure. The doctors took pretty good care of me..but the cardiac doctor in a quite reputable hospital decided he thought i should be on a statin for cholesterol. Well I informed him that I had been prescribed that previously by my family doctor and had a bad reaction to it. He wouldn't listen, don't know if he thought i was lying or what..prescribed me the exact same med that gave me weakness in my legs and sciatic pain before..well i told the nurse about it..and I told her I didnt want to taake it and explained why..so should took it off my meds.. well the self important doctor with no bedside manner or even common courtesy about him came in and demanded to know why I refused it. So I explained this to him AGAIN, then I asked him why he was so set on a statin for cholesterol? Was my cholesterol high? Well, he didnt know because he hadnt had it tested..ok..I'm in a cardiac ward for a heart problem and he wants to prescribe a medicine for something he hadnt even had tested? You'll excuse me if I laugh..I don't care how much schooling he had, he's an idiot. Sorry if that seems disrespectful, but its my opinion. Then after I got out, I went to VA for my followup treatment. Guess what? they want to give me a statin too, (just how much a kickback are these doctors getting for prescribing statins anyway? ) So, here we go again, I explain how I can't tolerate a statin, they decide to give me a differnt kind than lipitor, small dose, so I agreed t try it. One week in extreme sciatic pain and weakness in my legs, so I quit taking it. I told the Cardiac Doctor there she could prescribe it all she wants, ship it to me and even wrap it with a red ribbon but I will NOT take it. Finally they decide to listen to me. Like someone said in this thread, its my body, but obviously I was imagining it..yeah ok doc.
Oh, and btw he had my cholesterol tested, it was in normal range..lmao

You're kinda taking the harsh defensive on this, aren't you? It was his doctors that told him his extended stay on the ventilator could possibly have been the cause of his sleep apnea. I think their theory being that by that point, his body was basically trained to have something else breath for it. You can't even blame it on him being a chubby bastard, because, at the time, he was a sickly, skinny fucker. Now that he's a chubby bastard again, he finds himself rarely needing the mask.
From what I gather, being on continuous mechanical ventilation for 3 months does unpredictable things to people. Mainly because most people who spend any extended amount of time on continuous mechanical ventilation usually die soon after.

He says they said that. It doesn't mean they did. And I'm saying this about the apnea because it's the most likely thing. Skinny people rarely get sleep apnea, and I've never met someone with it who wasn't overweight. It's like the people who tell you they got back ache because of an epidural they had 10 years ago. Go look up the structures that are pierced, then look up the contribution of them being overweight with awful posture. I'm a scientist first and foremost so these reports, and your friend's, make me sceptical.
Of course he could be a rare case. Everyone is unique.
GA - yeah, that its dumb. Which country was this?

I can understand that. But you have to realize he didn't come to the doctors and say he was suffering from sleep apnea. He came in complaining about a near complete lack of energy. It took them months of tests before they eventually sent him to a sleep clinic, where he was then diagnosed with what turned out to be a severe case thereof.
It might not actually even be sleep apnea per se. Just something with enough similar symptoms that they classify and approach it as such.
SubJeff on 6/2/2012 at 07:43
No, it sounds like it and I'm not doubting he has it - I'm doubting the cause.

I should just get him to post in the forums and tell the sordid tale from the source.
Hell, I've been around it for 10 years, seen the results of the accident, and the recovery process, and I'm still raptly (and morbidly) fascinated by it.

So by
using my own experience on my second appendicitis (an "irritating attitude" according to you) and putting ice on it against the advice of several doctors who told me the same grim tales like Renz just did (Rupture!->Sepsis!->Death!), I avoided being drugged and cut up by doctors who didn't know better back then.
If this is how to prove oneself an idiot in your eyes, I'll take that risk any day.
SubJeff on 6/2/2012 at 10:50
You probably didn't have appendicitis.
And you seriously think that ice will save you in the event of a real sepsis? Furthermore you're happy to risk it to prove me wrong?
Go for it. Natural selection happening right here folks.
