Update.
FINALLY got a new remote for the TV (I couldn't do anything other than change channels otherwise), found out I don't have to buy an S-video cable (huzzah) and though I'd like to get a new HD and a wired controller, the 360 is usable now.
Dashboard updated just fine. Everything seems dandy and I had fun setting up my gamertag thingie. (it's dethtolldotmid if anyone was wondering)
Now if I can get my hands on a copy of Dead Rising...

I am always bargain hunting. With your fundage low, when I find something up your alley on 360, I'll grab you a copy. You have quite a bit to catch up on. As well as the BC last-gen Xbox exclusives.
