I don't know if this really warrants a new thread, but I'd rather not interrupt the great gouts of bilious contempt that the open beta is inspiring people to spew over in the Warhammer Online thread.
So, screw that. This just caught my eye on RPS - (
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/09/11/mythics-other-project/#more-2715) Mythic's Other Project.
Let's just say that it's an MMO that's going to be called The Stygian Abyss. Yes,
that Stygian Abyss. Now with 100% more gargoyles!
It's terribly interesting news. It's also a terrible shame that I shall probably never play it, this being an MMO and all that. Oh well. But I'm sure this will pique the curiosity of more than a few regulars around here.
EDIT: I probably should have also mentioned that this is going to be an expansion to Ultima Online. Funny how one forgets the one majorly important disadvantage of what one was going on about. Sorry. No first person for you!
And yes, I realise the implications and how sucky this could possibly be. :erg:

I was interested (and I do NOT play MMOs) until you said 'expansion to Ultima Online'. :tsktsk:

I know. Rather sad, innit? UO's pretty much dead in the water, and shit like this would have been interesting if Mythic had started it from scratch.

Sorry but I believe you don't know what the fuck are you talking about Sulphur.
The fact that it's an expansion to UO is the only reason to be interested in it in the first place. Which brings us to your "being MMO and all" comment. Here's a brief history of MMORPGs: First there was UO, which was a real fucking deal, you could really roleplay, buy a house, rob a bank, etc. Then Everquest was released and MMORPGs started to be all about grinding for XP and sword +1.
So if they're essentially making an UO remake, it'll be pretty damn fucking awesome.

Actually, something being made along the lines of the game it is named after would have been the reason for being interested in it.

Thanks for the shakedown on UO, Kokester. I already knew all that, though. Being a hardcore Origin/Looking Glass nut for years tends to do that to you.
I appreciate your perspective on what UO did for MMOs; however, as Matthew pointed out, I was interested in this because of the implications of the
title.
You know, one of them possibly being its relation to an earlier Origin/Looking Glass game, namely Ultima Underworld - The Stygian Abyss?

Well, there's infinity of reasons, for example there's a dude named Jonathan Carpenter working on it, isn't that a reason to try it out?
I still think a possibility of another proper MMORPG is better reason to follow it though

Not for me, I'm afraid.
