Not really - some higher level quests for the guilds can conflict with each other, and make it possible for you to be unable to rise higher in one particular guild. However, it is possible to join and rise to the top of all with the exception of the houses. You may only ever join one of these*.
*Without cheating/exploiting bugs, but then you'd only be able to complete one.

Ok, you can join all guilds (except houses) and no quests will conflict except some in the theif's and fighter's guild, but it will be obvious which these are cause they involve killing important people of the other guild (note the fighter's guild one to kill telivanni agents has no effect on theives guild). The idea is that you can join whatever guild you want but you can only progress if you are skilled enough (you will note that guilds have requirements) in their perfered areas, you will notice each guild has their own requirements, it is in the stats mean when you put your mouse over the guild name. The religions let you join other religions, I don't know why, maybe they are like musilems and encourage the understanding of other religions. But the houses are really guilds, they are the powerfull warring factions of morrowind so you can only join one of them because they aren't very friendly to each other, they don't wage war on each other but you will notice a significant decrease in how much people from other houses like you when you join.

i should first join the fightersguild and the mages guild
then later sometime the thieves

I find if you work for the Fighters guild for any appreciable length of time, the Thieves simply won't let you in. (this is way before killing leaders is mentioned, BTW). They just say "we have our standards, and you don't meet them", when my stats and skills easily beat the official requirements.

After the explanations i got in morrowind, idecided i wanted in teh house of Redoran, adn in teh Imperial Legion.
But I think i'd better join the fighters guild first for a while...
Or do you guys think i should travel to nigrith (or something :S )
and join the Imperial Legion right away?

In my opinion, Imperial Legion quests tend to be more entertaining than some of the others. Like many of the older hang-abouts on this forum, I haven't played Morrowind in a while, but I remember fondly my time as a Legionaire. I would go ahead and try them out first. But really, it doesn't matter which you do first. Go on and have fun! Morrowind is about doing what you want, whenever you want. Even if it kills you!
Oh, and you need to go to Fort Darius in Ginisis to join. (Why Fort Darius and not Fort [---]moth?)

The Legion were the ones that insisted on wearing the correct uniform when you spoke. Was a little irritating when I forgot to change from my decent armour to something which I really just wanted to throw away.

That's why you get the... Oh! I won't say! :thumb:
Hint: It has 'Lord' in the name...

People don't question you if you happen to be 2 ranks above them. So I just gained a few ranks till I was above all the normal gaurds and then kept a chain mail vest near the people who gave me quests.
