And that would be different
how?
It'd be different in that Benny's thinking would make it too easy for Garrett(e?) Jr. to do her thing. :p

-What didn't poor people have in steampunk times? Makeup. Skin conditioners. Shampoo. A thief doesn't need to make herself look good. She's never seen anyway.
-One thing that could make the character more believeable: Rough voice. Not every thief-girl has a cutesy "Rikku voice" (e.g Rachael Leigh Cook). Not a deep, sexy, dominatrix voice either (e.g Mary E. McGlynn). Maybe a kind of "sore throat" whiskey-voice. (I can't remember any examples )
You're hell-bent on this woman being unattractive, aren't you?
If EM does it right we won't even really see her face in the game. As for voices, the female taffers find Garrett's quite attractive. Why should the guys get no sexy voice for a
female lead? :D

The only reason why the character shouldn't be that attractive is that I want the Thief games to be
different. There are so many attractive female protagonists nowadays in so many games that making the protagonist look a little more like an average human being is a far more interesting choice. It would make the character stand out from "normal" games. I want most new things in Thief 4 to be quite unique to games today. I don't want the character to look all fugly and fat, more like someone who you walk by on the street and forget instantly. And it's also better for a stealthy thief to be a regular Jane. :) Garrett doesn't look particularly attractive. For horny girl gamers Garrett would "look" sexy even if we never saw him because of Stephen Russell's voice, amirite? :p
And for the record, a rough voice on a female is not any less attractive than a deep voice, I think. Now, why can't I remember any actresses who are good with that voice? :grr:
I think it's called a "raspy" voice. There was this one girl in the army with me, she was a corporal, so her voice turned raspy after a few weeks of shouting. It sounded really cool and different.

Thief isn't medieval. Sorry.
And I've yet to see any women in thief that look like shit. So I agree with your initial point; she needs to look normal, not like a sex object, but also not "like shit." :)
Well, until the Industrial Revolution you have large parts of the European population living in poverty and after that you find an almost worse working class in the factories, left aside the few farmers and craftsmen who lived maybe slightly better or not and of course the upper classes. Unless you want to find any fantasy elements increasing the average income in the Thief world (which is, even more, a dystopic one, ergo bad and dirty) or assuming that Garrett et alii are well-off (although there would be no point in thieving then), you have to live with the "fact" that people like Garrett or a Garrettine look dirty and nasty. Or at least nastily-dressed. :p And personally I share Jean-Jaque Annauds taste for ugly characteristic faces.

The new game could show the coal soot coating everything, including clothing and the hands and faces of people slinking and crawling against structures and foliage. Old Birmingham comes to mind, and there's the Tolkien connection, too.
If we are to have the girl in Garrett's care--since he'd be compassionate and warm (never abusive and distant)--they could have a continued bonding experience, such as Garrett giving her a proper name, other than, say, "Rodent".

The Dark Engineering Guild made a good character out of Zaya, she had a distinct personality, although she didn't always feel like a true professional thief, but then again, she wasn't. :p The problem with Zaya was that she was unreasonable pretty. If you look at her face in (
http://www.thief2x.com/media/t2ximage3.asp) this pic you can't find a single flaw in her appearance. Her eyes are sparkling emerald green, her face has a very soft bone structure, she has huge lips with lipstick and a nice hair with details.
The world of Thief is ugly, rotten and rusty on the bottom, where the majority of the people and the criminals live, with a very thin layer of polished marble and gold on top of all that, the rich minority.
A female thief should be a very normal-looking girl. Nothing special. Just like a thief is supposed to look. A thief should blend in, not show off. Something sloppy like this.

I wonder if Garrett would give her the louse-free crew-cut like he sports?

It would be nice. My friend's sister just went to the army today, she had to cut her hair really short and somehow became instantly hotter. :p Maybe her hair was ugly?

OK then, Rodent it is! Jtr7, you've picked the perfect name!

I think that Julia is one of the most beautiful girls alive. Nice picture. Is it MS Paint?
