I just beat DX:HR (mostly loved it, might have drug on just a wee bit but overall brilliant), and I'm kind of worn out on quest/inventory/handholdy games.
I tried bioshock 2, which isn't altogether bad, but I really wish the game was completely hands off, no getting lead around by the nose by any number of allegorical characters.
So what I really want is half-life 3, but clearly I can't have that right now. Does anyone have a suggestion of a good game (I would LIKE a FPS, but I'll take indy or anything else) thats got a decent story but isn't stuffed down your throat that preferably has decent exploration? I half have a mind to mod the shit out of and then play Stalker SOC or COP, but I've played both twice already.
Any ideas? I have at least 20 games in my steam library I've not played but none are doing it for me. I was considering DayZ but its 30 bucks and I don't have any first hand recommendations from anyone.

Day Z is worth the money but you may want to consider waiting for the stand-alone version they announced.

Crysis?

Give Chaser a try. It comes from the awkward teenage years of FPS but despite its flaws I found it to be a very satisfying game. and it should only be 5 bucks either on Steam or GoG.

Skyrim is about quests so not in your criteria, but it definitely takes the "exploration" award for recent games. Maybe Amnesia (except you don't have a weapon, so it's more puzzle oriented)?
For the record, I think Half Life 3 is going to be as handholdy as HL2 was.
But if you're in a HL mood, you might try some good HL2 mods... I have my folder with them but can't remember which are the good FPSs of them, so maybe you could just google "Best HL2 mods".

@Dethtoll: That was my idea too, I just read about that.
@SE: Thats not a bad idea actually, I don't have it yet but I'm sure its on steam. My brother didn't think much of crysis 2, so the original seems the best bet?
@VA: Not heard of chaser, but I'll give it a look. I'm definitely not beyond playing old stuff by any means.
@Demagogue: I never actually got around to playing pnumbra, is it worth just skipping to amnesia or should I start at the very beginning?
Thanks for the suggestions guys.

penumbra and amnesia have nothing to do with each other as far as plot is concerned. 2 different IPs. They just play exactly the same. And depending on what you're running, you might have fun getting penumbra to play nice with your machine.
I had another thought too. I though I'd hate them, but Rainbow Six Vegas, specifically the 2nd one I put a lot of hours into. It's not the SP campaign, and not even necessarily the multiplayer. But playing the multiplayer matches solo against the bots is extremely difficult, and every time I died I would be spamming the retry button hours into the night. I still haven't beaten the campaign. And yet I still play the game constantly.

Didn't DayZ have some bigger hacker scare recently? Don't remember who posted about it, but I got the impression that it's totally messed up now. Hope that's not true as I recently got Arma2 and haven't gotten around to playing DayZ yet. :erg:

I enjoyed Crysis 2 very much. The controls are tighter, though the levels aren't quite as open as in the first game but what it lacks in non-linearity it makes up for in set-pieces. But you should defenitely play Crysis first, as it does have some wonderfully imaginative parts.
Though honestly, if it's open worldness and a good story you want I'd recommend Far Cry 2 over Crysis. The biggest criticism against the game are the respawning roadblocks, but learn how to map out your route and make use the bus-stations and they won't be a big hassle.

Maybe you need to try a new platform. The best console ever ps2 would be the logical choice.

For the record, I think that the sun will come out tomorrow. Tomorrow. The sun will come out tomorrow.
