Not sure how popular it is here, so I may get panned for suggesting it, but I'd recommend Time Shift for that HL2 vibe. I can't remember how hand-holdy it is, as it has been a while, but it definitely scratched the HL2 itch for me and I have completed it twice, which for someone with my attention span and lack of free time, says a lot.

Just Cause 2... I actually bought that during steam summer sales LAST year for like 2 dollars and didn't even play it yet. That might have to be the first one I tried.
You guys gave me a lot of good ideas though, thanks!

Just Cause 2 is great.
It can get a bit samey, but should keep you going for quite a while.

You make a good point. I do miss tdm. Its like guitar for me, as soon as I start getting half decent I lose interest and restart it a year later.
How are the FM's going? I enjoyed making maps (shit though they were), but the game never felt quite right to me, I hope the movement has been tweaked since I tried it out last.

If you want to play STALKER but don't feel like replaying STALKER, just get Far Cry 2.

Ghost Master: Same. Wasn't it a Dungeon Keeper clone?
It's a strategy/puzzle game with a ton of flavor and most maps have several optional goals and a ton of different solutions. The only comparison I'd draw to DK is the player being on the "Monster" side of things.

I'm going to suggest Metro 2033. It has some flaws for sure but it's my favorite FPS in the last few years. There's some feeling of exploration, not really any hand-holding, and the 'ranger' mode is totally immersive and awesome.
