The reviews I've read say it is utter crap. Less than 50% utter crap at that. That's pretty damning. I don't think one should necessarily pay attention to 90+% reviews as its largely a matter of taste, but if reviews are hitting below 50% something ain't right.
If you had bothered to read any of these reviews, rather than just look at the scores, you'll find that most were upset about optimisation and the rare game breaking bug (eg the IGN guy starting clipping through the ship about 2/3rd of the way through and couldn't finish the game).
There was some criticism of the combat, which is just justifiable, but people also whined about the environment variety. HELLO, YOU'RE ON A SHIP, fucking Christ.

Nauseating repetitiveness seems to be the main complaint. And a potentially interesting event altering time travel ability that hasn't been logically applied.

is ok, but if you expect to be as good as the first games you will hate it.

Yes it can be repetitive, particularly in the third quarter, and the mental echo is not used as well as it could have been, as it is it still creates many compelling moments, but it's a very satisfying single player experience if things like a very strong story and an immersive atmosphere are what turns you on. It's also nice for once to have a game where the last quarter of it is actually the best part of it.
I've also read plenty of reviews for it and (
http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/cryostasissleepofreason) most rate the game in the 7/10 category, there are very few reviews saying it's 'utter crap'.

Surprised no one has recommended The Darkness yet, it's a pretty damn solid title for the 360. Recently played through resident evil 5, which was a tonne of fun, but I could only really recommend it for the co-op. Fable II is something that really should get you hooked for a while, it was pretty fun if a little run of the mill. Hitman:Blood Money, and Splinter Cell: Double Agent should both be dirt cheap by now and great single player experiences. I have no real experiences with either series prior to either game, and am quite aware that some people poo poo both games from a series standpoint or for being faux-stealth games. They both have pretty spectacular sections to them, with a servicable storyline to go along.

I second The Darkness, shooter that feels like an adventure. Very dark and sinister game. Truly haunting at times, if you played it you know what I mean, yes that place. Such sadness.

FEAR 2 is a good rent, but I wouldn't buy it (luckily the local rental lets me rent daily for $1.50, it's a godsend). The game isn't bad, but it does feel a bit off in places and the combat and narrative aren't as compelling as the first.
I could never get into Assassin's Creed. A lot of people say it's decent but I made it about an hour in and gave up. The animation system is really superb but it can't make up for the fact that the core gameplay isn't compelling enough to warrant stretching the same thing over the course of the entire game.
If you already know that you enjoy Condemned, go out and buy that thing. The second one is pretty hilarious and camp, and the gameplay is all over the place, but I made it thru to the end in a few sittings and enjoyed it. Never played thru the first one myself, although I've played the demo and it feels much more hardcore and serious. I was compelled enough by the plot in the demo to want to play more, so if nothing else that narrative might keep you going. It really is surprising how much they changed the overall tone of that game between the two, though.
If you're an RPG guy, Oblivion and Fallout 3 will keep you occupied forever.
Grand Theft Auto 4 is probably the MOST engaging singleplayer game, at least for me it was, on the 360 at the moment. I've also heard that The Lost and the Damned is worth picking up, but I haven't tried it yet.

Try picking up the PS2/XB1 game The Warriors. Easily my favourite PS2 game that doesn't have "Metal Gear" in its name. It's like a throwback to the old beat-em-ups, along with lots of awesome shit like spraypainting over rival gang tags, starting a bum riot to distract the cops for a few minutes, breaking into a store and ordering your gang to smash and steal everything, etc.
Fuck, I should play that game again. What a great fucking game.
