I've been working on an old mission I dragged up from the morgue. I really like this one. Deleted a bunch of areas and started again with a lot less so I might finish it. But ...
There will come a moment when I will need a lot of tech help and a creature or a modified creature to simulate a baby Kraken. The mad sea captain is trying to train it to do his bidding. He shocks it when it does something he doesn't like, and feeds it goodies when it does what he wants. I might be able to get away with making a gif texture, or several of them, to create a murky looking creature moving about, since the kraken is of course held in a big tank.
Any opinions/ideas on this from better heads at the forum?

If you want a static object version, there's a giant squid in Sturmdrang Peak - final mission. If you wanted it to move it's tentacles, you'd need to add joints and stuff. It's also technically two objects.
Your best bet is probably to make it like a rat - different frames of an animation saved as unique models.

Hi Nicked - I'm afraid that's all beyond me. I wouldn't even know where to start. Sounds like something so complicated it might discourage me from finishing the mission.
But I will look at the model.
I think I once played a sci-fi mission that had creatures like jellyfish floating through caverns. Maybe I could do something with them if I can remember the name of the mission.
At any rate, thanks for the help, and I'll check out the static squid. If I made it into a vator, maybe I could do something that way? If the water in the tank was murky enough! Can we make green or brown murky water in Thief?

Yeah you can make murky water. It won't be volumetric or anything but you can certainly make differing opacity of water.
I wonder if those jellyfish were System Shock 2 enemies - might be something you could use there.
The other thing is, you can make a static model squash and change size using tweq stuff, that might be how squishy jellyfish was achieved.

Hello Christine:
Yes, those 2 little mushroomy things with the legs were in an old Thief mission. They don't really look much like a kraken, but maybe I could manage to disguise them somehow? I never played any System Shock missions. I will try to find out the name of the Thief mission they were in.

nicked: A squash? I'm laughing my butt off here ... but I see how it could possibly work.

Frobber uses some SystemShock2 enemies in his missions.

Squash = verb - as in, you can change different levels of an object's scale and orientation on X, Y & Z to give the impression that it's got a jelly-ish consistency.

What I like in this community is that someone comes up with a request like "I need a Kraken but it should be a baby Kraken.", and the answer is not "What." or "Go away." but actual, practical advice to help the OP. :D
