have you ever played (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driver_%28video_game%29) Driver? In that game the police AI does notice certain traffic violations and reacts accordingly. It's a lot of fun, especially when the active mission has a time limit, forcing you to exceed the speed limit and/or ignore the traffic lights. But it does result in constantly looking at the minimap to keep track of police's view range.
Also the exaggerated car physics make for an excellent 70s car chase feel.

I liked Driver, but seem to recall the very last mission being nigh-on impossible - about 5 seconds after spawning you get rammed by two police cars at top speed or some such. I think I did it eventually, though.

I'm going to assume we're discussing the 2010 version, as it was never explicitly stated which version. (although addink did talk about the original hot pursuit.)
The free roam is just that. Free roam. There's no cops, unfortunately. However, it does make for a nice casual play session if you just came home from work or something and don't need anything intense. In free roam you can just drive and drive, it's one huge "map."
The graphics are really nice, which is a big pro. The career mode is pretty strait forward, you either be a cop and chase the racers or you be the racer and be chased. You seem to start out in specific areas of one very large world map, rather than seperate maps like I remember from my older NFS games. (NFS high stakes, hot pursuit 2...)
Which can be taken as a pro or con, depends on whether you expected this NFS game to be like the old ones. For me I was a little dissapointed, but in the end it's a good racing game, not necessarily a "NFS racing game," but a decent game nonetheless. I do enjoy the addition of nitro, which was laking in the older games, even though it is kind of "cheap." (Before you say I'm behind the times in the series, yes I am aware of the newer NFS games having nitro in them. This is just the first NFS game I've owned with nitro in it.)
