Dude paying more for CPU than you do for the video card is just wrong.

Yea I was thinking of going with Intel Core i5-2500k Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) at $219.99 instead actually, but I'm not sure how it compares. Both this and i7 are quad core and have similar GHz, so dont know how else they compare.
And yea, I wasnt sure if this should go into gaming or tech, mods feel free to move as you see fit.

The difference between I5 and I7 is that I7 has Hyperthreading. This makes a single core look like two cores. The idea is to keep the CPU as busy as possible and gain maximum performance from available resources. I'm not sure how much it actually helps these days, but I remember it being almost useless back in the P4 days (at least in games). It mostly caused problems for developers who were incapable of coding products to work on multi-core processors.

Small potatoes I suppose but what do you need thermal grease for really?
Are you overclocking and buying new heatsinks etc?
Sulphur on 7/12/2011 at 08:04
He's getting the Hyper 212 fan on it according to the list, which I'd recommend because it does a pretty good job with a moderate OC. The default Intel cooler barely gets by on stock clock settings, IMO - load temps with it get to ~75 degrees and higher easily enough.

That was my question - does the mobo/case/cpu come with them already? Or do I need to get those separately. I am not planning to overclock initially (want to get it all running stable first) but want to leave room for the future (hence why im willing to spend the extra 10 bucks on the K)

Yup, your processor comes with a cooler and thermal grease. The heatsink's got a pat of thermal grease pre-applied, just mount 'n screw.
The Coolermaster Hyper fan, if you're getting it, doesn't though. You'll need the AS in that case.

Lemme guess, you're also one of those pedants who throws a tizzy whenever they hear someone referring to gun magazines as clips?
hahaha, guns

I think that CPU packages marked as "OEM" don't come with a cooler, make sure to contact the seller and ask if you're not certain about what you're getting. And Sulphur's right about the stock cooler, it wouldn't really do for overclocking. My 2600K, on default settings, idles around low-mid 40s and under load goes to around 70+. Not so high as to actually get me worried, but I wouldn't feel comfy overclocking with it. If you're not planning on doing that for now, though, it might be worth just sticking with the stock one.
I've seen the occasional whinging about the 560's behaviour, how much more would you have to put up for a 570? Might be worth considering.
Also, if you can afford it in your budget I'll echo Ulukai and lost_soul - SSD. Maybe a nice 80-120GB one to keep your OS and a game or two on. Really makes a difference.
Yakoob on 7/12/2011 at 12:12
Yea the 570 is like $340, whereas 560 Ti 448 is like $300. So its not a huge amount, but the other thing is, the card is only like 2-3 fps less in benchmarks, but also eats less power and heat, which is kind of a bigger reason to stick to it honestly.
Im also still torn on the i7 vs i5. Yea, it's 100 bucks, but as I said, I do a lot of coding and use adobe suite, so the extra performance might really make a difference for that (I hear VS2010 is already pretty resource heavy, why Ive been sticking to 2008 till now).
Oh and on that fan thing... honestly I just put it because I didnt know if Id need to get one or not, or if the stock one is any good. It was just in the "people who buy this also buy..." section on new egg. See, this is exactly WHY I want a prebuilt - there's just so much little minute crap like this you need to worry about ><
